You don’t have to pay through the nose to kill time and have fun playing an iPad game. Sure, there are lots of great iPad games for which you’ve got to dish out cash, but a number of fun iPad video games remain free.

Are you going to get the best game ever for zero dollars and zero cents? I mean, probably not. Might you see some ads along the way? But of course, my friend, nothing is truly free.

But what you can get for free, however, are fun iPad games that will help pass the time in a waiting room, or on a train, or while you’re mindlessly sitting on the couch. Here are eight of our favorite free iPad games.

Temple Run 2 is a game that is as addictive as it is simple. You run, jump, and slide to stay alive. It’s something akin to a classic Mario game, except you’re a character sprinting through ancient temples instead of an Italian plumber descending down pipes. Temple Run had its viral oment in the sun a while back, but it remains a good time.

In the free iPad game Oddman, you get to control wobbly, round fighters. Your goal is to basically bounce your enemy into oblivion. It’s an addictive mash-up of Super Smash Bros. and sumo wrestling.  Simple and fun.

While the latest version of Draw Something will run you $2.99, there remains a free version. Basically, Draw Something is a digital, interactive version of Pictionary. You draw something and somebody else has to figure out what you drew. But obviously the focus on drawing makes Draw Something a perfect choice for the iPad.

If you’ve got a need for speed, this is the free racing game for you. You might be able to find better, premium racing games, but Asphalt is a fun free option. You can race with dozens of real cars ranging from your average commuter Mitsubishi to super fast Lamborghinis you might never see in real life.

Fans of first-person shooters will want to check out Shadowgun. It’s got a single-player campaign mode, obviously, but also a few different modes to play multiplayer.  Again, it’s not going to match up to the experience on a PC or console, but it might be the best FPS option on an iPad.

Among us went fully viral last year amid the pandemic. Basically through astronaut avatars, you attempt to complete challenges with friends, while some players secretly try to kill everyone. Congresswomen Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar famously played in a game of Among Us on Twitch that garnered a truly bonkers amount of viewers.

Candy Crush Saga is the latest version of the beloved puzzle game, in which you have line up three matching candies in rows and complete objectives to advance levels.

Elder Scrolls: Blades is a role playing game with beautiful visuals and fun gameplay that’ll have you clashing in battle in no time. It’s not fully open world like its well-known cousin Skyrim, but you can get fully immersed in its setting. You’ll make your way through dungeons, rebuild your town, and fight progressively more difficult enemies. As far as mobile offerings go, it’s a solid RPG, even if the game is more task-based and less open-world than the higher-end offerings for PC or console gaming.
