B is a very, very common starting letter in Wordle. In fact, it’s the third most common overall, behind only S and C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #803)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #803) is… BRIDE.
I tend to think of a ‘standard’ Wordle as one that has three consonants and two vowels, particularly when the answer begins with two consonants and ends with an E. There are masses of these; CHORE and WHOLE and PRUDE and DRIVE and PLANE and FLUTE and SNORE and so on. Many of them feature among the best Wordle starting words: SLATE, CRANE, STARE, TRACE and CRATE all fit this pattern.
Today’s answer, BRIDE, is another one – and it comes with a standard average score of 3.9. Given that all five letters are common, and there are no repeats, that’s probably what you’d expect – but then again, the sheer volume of words with the same pattern may well have made it harder for some people to find the right combination.
As always, the difficulty level will probably have been governed to an extent by what your starting word was; CRANE (29 possible answers), CRATE (25) and TRACE (also 25) were much more helpful than SLATE (123) or SLANT (531), for instance. The best of the top choices, though, was TRICE – which left just 12 options.
My pick, STARE, was not as good as that, but with 52 options it wasn’t terrible either. My second guess was POUND, a word I chose because lots of the words I came up with started with P (PRICE, PRIME, PRIZE, PROVE etc) or D (DRIVE, DROVE, DRONE), or contained an N (CRONE, PRONE, BORNE).
“Bingo,” said WordleBot (I’m paraphrasing) – “that was the best word you could have played.” And it was certainly helpful, cutting those 52 possibles down to four. I could have gone with RIDGE, DIRGE, DRIVE or BRIDE, but decided to pick the last of those because a) I missed RIDGE and DIRGE and b) I figured B is a more likely letter to add than the V in DRIVE.
It was skewed logic, then, but I got lucky – all five letters turned green and I walked away with a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #802)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #802) was… AUDIO.
I talk a lot about the best Wordle starting words. I’m a firm believer in the advantage you gain by choosing a good one and sticking with it. And I regularly chastise people for starting with AUDIO or ADIEU, the two most popular options – but both words that aren’t usually that helpful.
Well, for today at least I shall shut up.
More so than any previous Wordle yet, this puzzle will split players into two camps.
On the one hand, the roughly 7% of players who start each game with AUDIO and who duly scored a fabled 1/6 today. On the other, everyone else.
Although that said, there’s a subset of group one, namely people who started with ADIEU; this is actually an even more popular opening guess than AUDIO, with around 9% beginning with it, and today it left just two possible solutions (AUDIO and AUDIT).
So, you have roughly 15% of players scoring either a 1/6 or (probably) 2/6 here. The fact that WordleBot says the average score is as high as 3.5 implies that for everyone else, this may have actually been quite tricky.
It certainly wasn’t a good beginning for anyone else, because most options left something north of 100 possible solutions. My choice, STARE, was at 186. Ouch!
Fortunately, my second word worked remarkably well. I always follow up a single yellow A with either MADLY or BADLY. Today, I went with BADLY and it cut my options to just two. From 186!
Those two were AUDIO and VODKA and I didn’t even consider the latter. As soon as I realized AUDIO was an option I just knew it would be the answer and played it next for a 3/6 that was far from the highest score today, but which somehow beat WordleBot all the same!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
