Donald Trump, like many people in their 70s, isn’t the most literate social media user. Nevertheless, it was still deeply embarrassing Friday morning when he retweeted an article which he believed relayed statements from his sister, Elizabeth Trump…but was actually from a parody account.

The article he retweeted was from the Wayne Dupree Show and said that Elizabeth “Betty” Trump had spoken out in support of her brother in a passionate tweet:

“This election inspired me to break my silence and speak out on behalf of my family,” said @TheBettyTrump, a Twitter account that was just created this month. “My brother Don won this election and will fight this to the very end. We’ve always been a family of fighters. We are all so very proud of him and the job he has done for our country. 4 MORE YEARS!”

Well, turns out this unverified, fresh account isn’t the real Betty Trump at all. Friday afternoon, @TheBettyTrump clarified that they’re merely a parody account.

The @TheBettyTrump account urged people not to blame the Wayne Dupree Show, as they hadn’t clarified things earlier. Regardless, the Wayne Dupree Show site updated the article and headline to reflect that Trump’s “alleged” sister tweeted in support of him…sure.

In any case, it was all too late for President Trump to save face, since it was very clear he had no idea his actual sister wasn’t involved. As of publication, Trump’s quote tweet is still up.

This is certainly not the first that he’s spread misinformation on Twitter, and not even the first time he retweeted a parody account he thought was real. While the former is terrifying, at least we can laugh at his expense when the latter occurs.
