A quick primer on The Muppet Show for anyone who’s not familiar: In the original primetime series from the ’80s, the characters Statler and Waldorf existed for the sole purpose of heckling Kermit and his friends. Perched in the theater’s balcony, the show would break things up between sketches by cutting occasionally to the two old Muppet men as they spat out hammy one-liners.
So the schtick in this Saturday Night Live sketch is: What if Statler and Waldorf (voiced here by Beck Bennett and Mikey Day) had a run-in with the theater’s bouncers? As Kenan Thompson and host Keegan-Michael Key demonstrate here, it wouldn’t go well for them!
