Well, it’s as they say. First comes robot-witch love, then comes robot-witch marriage. Now, with episode 3 of WandaVision, comes robot-witch parents with a double baby carriage. Congratulations, Wanda and Vision: It’s twin boys!
The birth of little Billy and Tommy isn’t a surprise for those who watched the trailers for WandaVision and clocked images of Wanda and Vision with two children, but the fact that they’re here — and definitely named Billy and Tommy — is a telltale sign that the next generation of Avengers has arrived in the MCU. There’s reason to worry about where those twins came from, how they were conceived, and the fact that they gestated in about 14 hours total, but we’ll get to that later. For now, those 12-month-old sitcom newborns might be the first step in creating the franchise’s Phase 4 future.
First born is Tommy, who in the comics becomes known as the hero Speed. As his name and his Uncle Pietro’s powers might suggest, he’s super fast. So fast that in some incarnations, he can vibrate his molecules quickly enough to phase through solid objects like Vision. Second born is the surprise twin Billy, later known as Wiccan. He can warp reality, perform telekinetic feats, mess people up with blasts of magic, and basically is Wanda 2.0. Their powers are important because in the comics, they eventually use them as members of the superhero team called the Young Avengers.
Other members of the Young Avengers in the books include Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, Ant-Man’s daughter Cassie Lang as Stature, America Chavez/Miss America, a young “Kid” version of Loki, the super-soldier Elijah “Patriot” Bradley, and a young pre-villainous version of Kang the Conqueror called Iron Lad. If those characters start ringing any bells, it’s because every single one of them is connected to an already announced Disney+ or feature film installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Kate Bishop is in Hawkeye, Cassie Lang and Kang the Conqueror will be in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, America Chavez will be in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (as will Wanda, we might add), and Loki has his mysterious adventure coming up in Loki. The only solid exception in the above list is Patriot, but there has been some speculation that Elijah Bradley may appear in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
There are other Young Avengers in the comics, notably Vision himself, Marvel Boy, and the heroes Hulkling and Prodigy, but there’s plenty of time to introduce them or shuffle the exact lineup for a future Young Avengers project. Especially since Hulkling and Prodigy are, in the written canon, Billy and Tommy’s boyfriends. Yup, neither of Wanda and Vision’s sons are straight. Welcome to the (potential) future of the MCU.
To get back to the original question of how and why Billy and Tommy were even born in the bizarro sitcom universe of WandaVision, there aren’t that many answers right now. There’s a lot of backstory for the twins in the comics, one part of which details that Wanda created her sons from fragments of Mephisto’s soul…but what would the demonic villain Mephisto be doing in WandaVision? Oh wait, he might already be there.
The origins of the twins are only one of the many mysteries of WandaVision, and while the birth of two potential Young Avengers is the highlight of “Now In Color,” Geraldine’s magical expulsion from Westview in the episode’s last moments hints that some, if not all of our questions might finally be answered. With six episodes to go, they better hurry. Who knows how old the fast-growing babies might be by the time the finale rolls around.
