Wordle today is slightly harder than yesterday’s, but still below the average for the game. In fact, WordleBot states that it’s taking 3.8 guesses for most people to solve, so it’s not too bad at all.
Choose one of the best Wordle starting words, meanwhile, and you’ll have had a great chance of a 3/6 or even better.

Wordle today (game #593) – hint #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has one vowel*. (Need another hint? Next I’ll tell you what the first letter is.)
There’s just the one vowel in today’s Wordle answer, which happens more often than you might think. Wordle has an average of 1.75 vowels per game among its 2,309 answers, so you’d expect two vowels slightly more often, though.
The last game to have one vowel in it was yesterday’s SCOLD.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

S is the most common starting letter in the game, with a massive 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 solutions beginning with it.
It’s one of the reasons why many people’s choice of best Wordle starting word begin with an S. As it happens, yesterday’s answer also started with an S.

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle. (I’ve got one more hint if you need one below.)
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one, so this is no major surprise.

Wordle today (game #593) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #593, is… SHIRK.
This has not been the hardest week in Wordle history, and the trend continued today with another puzzle that WordleBot says people are solving in fewer than 4 guesses on average. In this case, it’s at 3.8 – so slightly harder than yesterday’s SCOLD, but not by much.
I made slightly harder work of it than I should have, though, with a third guess that was essentially a waste of a go.
Things didn’t get off to the best of starts, either, with just a single yellow R from my opening CRATE. That left me with 77 words, according to WordleBot, but then none of the really common start words would have helped much today. The best of WordleBot’s favored options was TRICE – which left just 11 solutions – but most of its top choices were in the 60-100 range.
That’s not that surprising, though, because neither H or K features in many of the best Wordle starting words, and I is a lot less frequently used than A, E and O.
My go-to word after a single R is generally ROUND, as it uses another two vowels plus the common N and D. But it didn’t help much today on the face it, still leaving me with just that yellow R.
If only I’d had access to WordleBot at this stage my game might have been rather different, because it turns out I now had just seven possible answers left: SHIRK, SWIRL, WHIRL, SMIRK, MYRRH, GIRLY and SPRIG.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, though; at the time I figured I still had lots of options and instead played SLIMY. I knew this couldn’t be the answer, but I wanted to narrow things down as much as possible, and playing this enabled me to include as many of the remaining common letters as I could.
Still, though the chance of a 3/6 had gone it did the trick by giving me a green S and I, and reducing my options to just 1. I found SHIRK fairly quickly and played that for a slightly-above-par 4.
Wordle yesterday (game #592) – hints

Wordle yesterday (game #592) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #592, was… SCOLD.
The past couple of games have been around or above 4, so this was a nice easy one with a 3.6 average according to WordleBot.
There are really no obvious complications to it. As a word it’s a relatively common one – but note that SCOLD, meaning to angrily rebuke someone, is different from SCALD (meaning a burn caused by dry heat. That was the answer to game #467, as it happens).
All of the letters are common ones, too. S is the most common starting letter in the entire game, and C, O and L all feature in the top 10 letters overall. D is just outside that, at 13th, but it’s the 8th most likely letter to end a Wordle answer.
I started with CRANE here, rather than CRATE as I’d been doing, but I’ll probably switch back again as I really like including a T in my starting word. Anyhow, it made little difference today, as neither features in SCOLD.
WordleBot said I had 69 words left, which is quite a lot – and which almost certainly ruled out a 2/6 for me. Better options included SLATE (20 answers remaining) and STALE (13), but best out of the commonly played options was CLONE, which would have left just two solutions!
With just a yellow C to go with, I tried to work out which vowels might be included. POUCH seemed a decent option as P is also a common starting letter and C is regularly paired with H at the end of the word.
WordleBot liked this well enough and told me after the game that it had narrowed down my options to just five words: SCOLD, SCOFF, SCOOT, STOIC and SCOWL.
I’ll be honest: I didn’t bother trying to find them all; I was in a rush and instead played the first word that fitted. SCOLD was that word and it scored me yet another 3/6.
So again, I got lucky. But on the other hand, there was some calculation there – L and D are very common letters overall, so even if I’d identified all five possible solutions I’d probably have played it over a word containing a W (SCOWL) or a double letter (SCOOT or SCOFF).
Either way, the Wordle gods smiled on me. Hopefully they helped you out too.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
