We love spoiling our pets, but we’ll take any opportunity to save a little money in the process. April 11 is National Pet Day, which means some brands are offering discounts throughout the week—including a few of our favorite products for dogs and cats.
Be sure to check out all of our pet guides, including the Best Cat Toys and Supplies, Best Dog Accessories and Essentials, and Supplies and Tips for New Pet Owners.
Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-Year Subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off). This includes unlimited access to WIRED.com and our print magazine (if you’d like). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.
Pet Tech Deals
WIRED Gear editor Adrienne So liked the original version of the Fi collar. The Series 2 is similar in a lot of ways. It’s lightweight, has a light for night walks, and packs GPS and sleep-tracking capabilities. (The former uses a combination of your phone’s cellular network or home’s Wi-Fi.) You’ll want to subscribe to Fi’s service to get the ability to track your pet’s location wherever they are (cost: $99 a year, less with a longer contract), but it’s not necessary.
We recommend a few good veterinary telemedicine services, including AirVet, which can connect you to your existing vet or whoever is available during emergencies 24 hours a day. It has gone up in price to $30 a month (there was a $20 option when we first tried it), but you can cancel anytime. (AirVet, like Pawp, also now offers a $3,000 emergency fund, which wasn’t available when we tried it.) This sale offers a discount on your first month. Sale ends on April 14.
WIRED reviewer Jaina Grey loved using her Litter-Robot 3 Connect (8/10, WIRED Recommends), and all the bundles are currently $50 off. Self-cleaning boxes rarely go on sale, so this is a good time to buy. There’s the Essentials Bundle ($668), which includes a ramp, a fence (to keep litter inside), 25 drawer liners, and three carbon filters. The Clean Bundle ($723) includes all the above plus Litter-Robots cleaner wipes. You can also get one litter box and one automatic pet feeder for $798, or two Litter-Robots for $1,098.
Cat Furniture Deals
My cats have been using Mau’s Cento tree for a few weeks, and they love it—as do I. It was easy to put together myself, and the pieces are well made—enough to hopefully outlast claws and heavy bellies. It also just looks really nice in my apartment. You can use the same NPD20 code to take $20 off any purchase that’s $200 or more.
I haven’t tried this, but I’ve seen it pictured across social media, and it has solid reviews around the web. It looks cute, and for $25, it’s not a bad price to give it a shot. If you—or your cats—don’t like it as much in person, you can return it within 30 days.
This is a good option if you have a small cat. I bought it a few months ago when I spotted it at my local Home Goods, but I ended up bringing it back when I realized my cat Huxley was far too big for it. However, it was easy to put together, and it won’t take up too much space in a room.
Pet Bed Deals
You and your furry pal can have matching comfortable mattresses. WIRED editor Julian Chokkattu says his dog Tobu loves this Purple bed. It’s made with two layers of foam and Purple’s waffle-y grid, so it’s soft yet firm. It’s held up well despite more than four years of regular use. The cover is easy to clean too—just throw it in the washing machine. There are small, medium, and large sizes available, so there are options for a cat or a Great Dane to lounge.
We haven’t tested this yet, and the price is high, but your old dog might benefit from it (there are a few different options and sizes). The University of Pennsylvania conducted a clinical study using this bed and found that dog owners reported real improvements in their dogs’ mobility. You can read all the findings in this downloadable PDF. Plus it’s made in the USA.
More Pet Deals
PetCo has discounted a bunch of its pet supplies, including cute clothes, carriers and cages, and toys for dogs, cats, fish, birds, reptiles, horses, and small animals like hamsters and ferrets.
If you can run to your nearest Target for a pickup, or want to spring for same-day delivery, its Boot and Barkley brand is running a similar sale on a bunch of toys, bowls, and other accessories for dogs and cats. I’ve bought a few cat items from this brand and am always impressed by the quality. My cat Eely-Rue was particularly obsessed with this Wave Scratcher.
Chewy is running a sale that lets you snag two items and the third will be free. That includes deals on toys, leashes, collars, and more.
