Wordle clues (game #619) – hint #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has two vowels*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle clues (game #619) – hint #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is P.

P is a very common first letter among Wordle answers. It’s the fifth most common in the alphabet and begins 141 solutions in total.

Wordle clues (game #619) – hint #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle clues (game #619) – hint #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is A.

A is a relatively uncommon ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of only 63 in which you’ll find an A there.

Wordle today (game #619) – the answer

The answer to today’s Wordle, game #619, is… POLKA.

Sometimes it just isn’t your day. Today’s Wordle answer has a slightly above average score of 4.1, according to WordleBot, so I’m annoyed that I only managed to grab a 5/6 myself.

Ultimately I was thrown by the position of the A, which isn’t that unusual at the end of an answer, but is still much more common in every other spot. And yes, I did end up trying it everywhere else before I gave up and put it in position #5. But the K is also a relatively uncommon letter where it sits today and the word itself is not one that readily springs to mind.

My choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, was not useful at all – it left me with a massive 187 possible answers. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite was better, without really being that helpful still – it left 73 possibles. Most of the other top picks were above 100.

Many games will therefore have got off to a poor start today, making that second guess more important than it is on some days.

WordleBot suggested after the game that I should have chosen CANAL next, but I’d generally never play a word with a repeated letter so early. Instead, I went with DAILY – which WordleBot liked. However, it also told me it was an unlucky guess on this occasion, and that it still left me with 20 possible solutions. Gulp.

I really needed to find out where that A went, and now the L too. But both appear frequently in lots of spots, so this was tough. I put the A at the start next, and included an O in my search for a second vowel. Again, I was unlucky – those letters just would not turn green, and I now had a third yellow to locate.

At this point, I started worrying slightly. Playing LOCAL was my attempt to guarantee some greens. Including the L twice would mean I would definitely know where both the L and A were located by my next guess, because I’d have tried them both in every other place by then. And it worked. The O turned turned green and the L and A stayed yellow, meaning that the format had to be -OL-A.

What word could that be? Only one, as it turns out, and I finally found POLKA on the fifth guess.

Wordle yesterday (game #618) – the answer

The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #618, was… WORSE.

Oh dear. I’ve been playing Wordle for 420 games now, as well as completing the first 219 that I missed via one of the Wordle archives. And in that time I don’t think I’ve ever made quite such a stupid mistake as I did here. It didn’t cost me that much – I still scored a 4/6 – but it should definitely have been a 3/6. Just goes to show that you need to concentrate at all times when playing Wordle.

The annoying thing is that this was a reasonably tough answer that I should have solved in way below the average of 4.2 that WordleBot is reporting for it. It’s not a particularly difficult word in some ways – all of the letters bar W are very common – but there are quite a few similar options that have the same letters, and I allowed for that in my guesses.

My choice of the best Wordle starting words, STARE, also helped greatly, giving me yellow S and R, and green E, and leaving me with just 11 possible answers for my second guess. That was much more successful than most start words here; SLATE left 31 possible answers, CRANE 46 and TRACE 42, for instance.

I came up with seven of those 11 possibles myself: VERSE, CURSE, NURSE, PURSE, WORSE, HORSE and PROSE. I missed REUSE, ROUSE, RINSE and FRISE – though I did also find GORSE, which WordleBot didn’t consider an option.

With so many similar words to pick from, I decided to narrow things down with a word that couldn’t be the answer but which would eliminate most of the others. I chose POUCH, which would have almost guaranteed a 3/6 for me.

And it worked. WordleBot awarded me 97/99 for skill, and informed me (after the game) that I now had just one possible answer remaining: WORSE.

Unfortunately, I screwed up. For some reason I missed the fact that H had just been ruled out, and played HORSE rather than WORSE. Whoops!

I realized my mistake on the next guess and solved this Wordle in 4/6. But it really should have been better.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
