Hurrah! Today’s Wordle is a bit easier, thankfully, with an average score of just 3.9 in normal mode or 3.7 if you play the hard version. With one of the best Wordle starting words, you might even score a 2/6. Then again, if you get unlucky with your opening guess, you might still struggle – and that’s where some Wordle clues might be handy.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle today (game #622) – the answer
The answer to today’s Wordle, game #622, is… SQUAT.
Right, so we’re theoretically back on easy street after more than a week at the other end of town. WordleBot – our friendly neighborhood AI helper – says people are solving this one in an average of 3.9 guesses, so there’s really no excuse for failing it.
Or is there? Because that average score will undoubtedly be influenced by the fact that some of the best Wordle starting words were incredibly helpful today. If you played SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, you had just eight possible solutions left. If you played my favorite, STARE, it was five. And if you started with SLANT… well, then you had just two left and a guaranteed 3/6 at worst.
However, if you started with CRANE, TRACE, CARTE, CRATE or plenty of other words, it was a different story. In fact, CRANE left 187 possibles. So this one could divide opinion.
And of course if you didn’t get off to a good start then today’s Wordle might still have caused some problems for you, because SQUAT has a Q in it – and Q is the second least common letter in the entire game. It features in just 29 Wordle answers in any position, and a mere five when used as the second letter as it is here. Only J is a less frequent visitor to the game.
None of that was a problem for me. With the S confirmed and the A and T both yellow, I could see there weren’t many options left to me. I didn’t actually find them all, though; instead, I spotted SAINT right away and decided that was a good choice. The others, if you’re interested, were SALTY (which I also found), SQUAT, SPLAT and SATIN. Lots of people also guessed SATAY, although WordleBot doesn’t think it was a possible answer.
SAINT helped a bit, giving me a green T and confirming the A as going right before it – so S–AT. I now had two options left, SPLAT and SQUAT, but only spotted SQUAT. Lucky was with me today, though, as it turned out to be the right answer and gave me my first 3/6 since Sunday’s SYRUP. That’s a nice way to end the working week.

Wordle yesterday (game #621) – clues

- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.

Wordle yesterday (game #621) – the answer
The answer to yesterday’s Wordle, game #621, was… ABOVE.
This is as average as they come. WordleBot says people are solving it in 4 guesses, I solved it in 4 guesses, WordleBot itself solved it in 4 guesses… and I bet plenty of you solved it in 4 guesses, too!
As a word, it’s a very common one – I’m sure most of us use ABOVE more often than we do MOOSE or POLKA, for instance. So that may have made guessing it easier. But on the flipside, some of the letters are slightly less common, and there are a couple of similarly spelled alternatives, so that will have increased the average and prevented it being a doddle.
You get three vowels and two consonants, with the O and E in very common places; the A slightly less so. You get a B, which is a common starting letter but not so common elsewhere. In fact, ABOVE is one of only 16 Wordle answers in which a B is in position #2. And you get a V, which is less common than B overall, but much more common in its position here. So, it’s a real mixed bag, and one where a 4/6 feels like a fair score.
None of the best Wordle starting words were all that useful today. WordleBot’s favorite, SLATE, left 37 possible answers, while the likes of CRANE (57) and TRACE (52) were slightly less successful. My own choice, STARE, left 46.
I decided not to go for a 2/6 – the odds were against me today – and instead played ALIGN. This was also one of WordleBot’s top choices, but today it wasn’t all that lucky. Yes, it reduced my possible options from 46 to just four, but against that those four were all equally likely: ABOVE, AWOKE, ADOBE, ABODE.
Given that three of those four contained a B, and two contained a D, my third guess was an easy one – it had to be ABODE or ADOBE. Either would guarantee a solve in 4/6, with a 25% chance of a 3/6. I went for ABODE, WordleBot went for ADOBE, neither was right, but we both found ABOVE on the next go. All pretty straightforward.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
