Today’s Wordle answer ups the difficulty level after four pretty easy ones, so you might well want some hints for it. WordleBot, the NYT’s AI helper tool, says people are solving it in 4.1 guesses on average – so be careful out there.
The good news is that I can help. I’ve played every day since December 2021, and can provide you with tips for how to play the game and specific clues for today’s Wordle.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #655)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #655) is… SMASH.
This one is quite a bit harder than the past few, with an average score of 4.1 according to WordleBot. That’s not super-high as Wordle goes, but it’s more than half a guess above yesterday’s answer (see below).
Depending on your choice of the best Wordle starting words, you may well have had many possible solutions open to you. That’s partly because S is by far the most common starting letter in the game (it begins 365 Wordle answers, which is nearly 16% of all games) but also because there are many, many words that have a similar structure.
In fact, there are dozens of words that differ by either one or two letters: the likes of SLASH, SWASH, STASH, AMASS, SMALL, SMACK, SHACK, SHALL, SHAPE, SHALE, SHAWL, SHADY, SHAKY, SHANK and almost certainly lots of others would have given you three or four yellows or greens.
Narrowing them down is part of today’s challenge, but it’s not the only one. The repeated S is also a problem, for instance. Though S is the seventh most likely letter to be repeated in Wordle, it’s much more common to find both examples together, rather than separated. There are 49 Wordle answers that contain two Ss, but of those 36 put them next to each other.
So, it’s set up to be difficult, but it’s not impossible. Many top starting words will have left you with around 30 possible solutions (SLATE, STARE and SLANT were all in that range) and that’s not so many options that a 3/6 is unlikely.
Indeed, that’s what I managed today. With a green S and A after my first guess, I could see that the key letters to eliminate included H (SHACK, SHAWL etc), C (SCAMP, SCALY, SCALD) and L (SLACK, SLANG, SLASH). I was also helpful to rule out SLAIN, SWAIN and SNAIL.
I would also have liked to include an N, but couldn’t find a way to do that with those other letters, so went with CHILD. WordleBot liked this, awarding me 88 for skill, although it would have played PLINK. My choice was more successful, though: it left me just two possible answers, SMASH and SWASH, whereas it would have had to pick from three.
I couldn’t remember whether either had been a past Wordle answer, so I just went with the one that seemed most likely to be an actual solution and scored a fortunate 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #654)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #654) was… RATIO.
Wow. That’s four games in a row with an average score below 4, and this one if (potentially) the easiest of the lot. People are solving this one in 3.5 guesses, according to WordleBot, which is actually among the lowest scores we’ve had in the entire history of Wordle.
Why is it seemingly so easy? Well, all five letters are super common. Those of you who use a vowel-heavy starting word such as AUDIO will have been particularly well served today, given that RATIO includes an A, I and O. In fact, some of the best Wordle starting words were very helpful today; my choice, STARE, left me with just 17 possible solutions, the same as TRACE and one fewer than CRATE. CARTE left just four!
I didn’t find all 17 of those possible solutions, but I came up with a handful, including TRIAL, ACTOR, TARDY, TRIAD, PARTY, AORTA, RATTY and the eventual answer. And for once, I decided to make an outright guess on the next turn, rather than further narrowing things down; we all have to take a risk sometimes, eh?
As it happened, it wasn’t too much of a risk anyway. PARTY wasn’t right, but it gave me a green A and narrowed down my options to just two words, RATIO and GATOR. However, I hadn’t spotted that GATOR was a possibility – so I played RATIO anyway and scored a fortunate 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
