Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #697)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #697) is… PLANK.
Is this the easiest Wordle week ever? Quite possibly. The average scores for the past six games have been 3.7, 3.6, 4.2, 3.6, 3.5 and another 3.7 today. That’s… 3.7 overall, which is seriously low. In fact, it’s the lowest six-day average this year. It’s certainly uncommon to get just one game over 4.0 in that length of time.
Anyway, we can all agree that this is another easy one without even needing to see what the stats say, because that should be obvious by looking at it. No repeated letters here, only one uncommon letter, K – and that’s actually not uncommon at all at the end of a word. P is a fairly middling letter in general, but is the fifth most likely to start a Wordle answer. So you have all the ingredients for a simple solve.
Your job was made easier still if you picked one of the best Wordle starting words. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 21 possible answers, CRANE left 20, SLANT just eight and PLATE only five. My STARE wasn’t quite so good – 43 answers remained – but it was a darn sight better than ADIEU (352).
With a single green A in place, I knew there were quite a few options to pick from. In fact, I had my notes from a previous game, PLAZA (game #680) which had the same scenario. I knew that there were lots of words that included either an L and an N, or both – for instance BLAND, BLANK, PLANK, PLAID, BLACK, CHAIN, PLAIN and GLAND, so I decided to include both in my second guess. CLING did the job nicely; WordleBot said it was a great choice, and told me after the game that it had reduced my options to just four.
I had come to the same conclusion: BLANK, PLANK, FLANK and BLAND were the only suitable words I could find. Unfortunately, all were equally likely and I was a bit torn as to whether to guess one and risk a 5/6 – but possibly end up with a 3/6 – or to further narrow it down and guarantee a 4/6.
In the end I decided to shoot for glory and went with BLANK. I knew that if it was wrong I would have either a certain 4/6 (if the B was green but the K was not) or a 50/50 (if the K was green but not the B). And guess what? The latter happened.
So, a 3/6 was torn from my grasp and a 4/6 was not yet nailed on either. Maybe luck would finally be in my favor next? I played PLANK and for once, guessed right. Another 4/6 for me – my third in four games, which is frustrating given how easy these have all been.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #696) was… LATTE.
I’m a little annoyed with how my game went today. I ended up with a 4/6, which is fine, but the average today was just 3.5 so it feels like a missed opportunity to score a 3/6. What’s more, WordleBot did it in 2/6, and I hate losing to the ‘bot.
Admittedly, WordleBot did have an advantage today. It’s favorite of the best Wordle starting words is SLATE, and remarkably that left just one possible answer here. STARE left me with just nine, but even so I couldn’t narrow it down quickly enough.
The repeated T is the only remotely complicated aspect of LATTE, and it did cost me a guess; I figured a TH pattern was more likely and initially went with BATHE. Then, for my third guess, I played MATTE, having entirely missed that LATTE was a possible solution. Frustrating all round.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website (opens in new tab) or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS (opens in new tab) / Android (opens in new tab)), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
