You might think that you don’t need any clues for Wordle today, but remember: failure in this game is only ever six guesses away.
Below, you’ll find a selection of Wordle hints to guide you in the right direction. You don’t have to use them all, but there are five in total should you need them, covering vowels, starting letter, ending letter and more. And if you don’t have time to play at all, you can see the answer, too.

V is a fairly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. There are only 43 answers that begin with a V, and it ranks just 16th.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #746)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #746) is… VENOM.
VENOM is a nice word and a nice Wordle. Well, not a nice word as such, given that it describes something harmful to many living creatures, but a satisfying word to say. Go on, try it. VENOM. VEN-OM. Maybe it’s just me.
It’s not just me who may have found it a hard Wordle to solve, though. VENOM has an average Wordle score of 4.1, according to WordleBot, making it a good deal tougher than yesterday’s IRATE or Sunday’s HOTEL. And if you want to know why, well that’s as simple as looking at the first letter. V is not a common letter in general, and though it’s slightly more likely to be found at the start of a word than it is in some other positions, it’s not the kind of letter you play on a whim.
It doesn’t feature in any of the best Wordle starting words either, which is probably why none were very helpful today. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left 329 possible solutions and the likes of TRACE (265), SLANT (163) and my STARE (249) were not much better.
Nor did my second guess do quite as much good as some have in previous games. BLEND gave me a yellow N, but the E refused to go green and the upshot was that I still had 17 options left.
Several of these started with W (WOMEN, WOVEN, WOKEN), so I decided to play WENCH next – which WordleBot didn’t like. In fact, it only awarded me a measly 62/99 for skill and said it “wasn’t my favorite”. Well, given that WENCH reduced my options to just two – VENOM and XENON – I’m not entirely sure why it was so negative.
I didn’t even consider XENON as an option, so played VENOM for my 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #745)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #745)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #745) was… IRATE.
Some days, the best Wordle starting words really come into their own. Today is one of those days. Almost all of the top choices drastically reduced the options available for the second guess – which is exactly what they’re designed to do. If you’re not using one, you’ll have been at a disadvantage right away. Of course, that may not bother you – maybe you prefer to play a more relaxed game of Wordle, testing your skill and riding your luck each day. If that’s the case, I salute you. But I bet I probably beat you too.
IRATE is not a particularly hard Wordle to solve, regardless of what your start word was. WordleBot says it has an average score of just 3.6, which is the same as yesterday’s HOTEL. All five of the letters in use are very common; four are in the top five, and I sits only just outside it, at seventh. Admittedly, it’s not a common letter to start a Wordle answer – just 19th – but it’s a regular visitor to Wordle solutions all the same.
The best starter word (other than IRATE itself) was TRICE, which left just one possible solution. But plenty of others were only just behind it. CRATE, CARTE and TRACE all left just three solutions, ADIEU left five and SLATE left seven.
My choice, STARE, left six: CRATE, GRATE, IRATE, ORATE, TRACE and TRADE. And that meant that I faced a dilemma. I could go for glory and shoot for a 2/6, but doing so might leave me scoring a 6/6 at worst. Or, if I was a bit smart about it, I could play TRACE or CRATE and be certain of no worse than a 5/6. But I wanted a higher score than that, and as I don’t play on Hard Mode, I was able to guarantee one.
Playing TOXIC made it certain that I would score a 3/6 (and also certain that I wouldn’t score a 2/6). If the T turned green and the C yellow, it would be TRACE. If the T turned green and C stayed gray, it would be TRADE. If the T turned yellow and the O also went yellow, it would be ORATE. The C would (in combination with the T) point the way to TRACE or CRATE, and the I to Irate.
As it happened, the latter scenario played out. The T stayed yellow and the I also changed color, meaning it had to be IRATE. I played that next and scored a straightforward 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
