Today’s Wordle answer (game #759)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #759) is… FLYER.
Right, so this one is an ER game, arguably the toughest subset of words within Wordle. As evidence for that, my average across 563 games is around 3.6, but across 34 ER games it’s a little over 4. And that includes seven scores of 5/6 and four of 6/6.
Today wasn’t quite as bad as that: I solved FLYER in 4/6 and WordleBot gives it a surprisingly low average score of 4.3, rather than, for instance, the 4.6 we had for HATER, the 5.0 for COWER or the 5.4 for JOKER.
Much of that is no doubt due to the fact that there’s a Y in it where you’d usually find another vowel, and that F and L, the two non-R consonants, are both quite common in their own right.
Let’s take the first of those first. Y is not as common as the five ‘standard’ vowels (A, E, I, O and U) in Wordle, but it is common as an ending letter. People therefore may have played it fairly early on today, thinking that it might end the word, but when it subsequently turned yellow this will have substantially narrowed down the number of words which could be the answer (there are only 58 Wordle words in which a Y appears anywhere else but at the end).
To give you an example, 6% of people today played REPLY as their second guess – those 6% will have had a big advantage when it came to solving the Wordle on their third or at worst fourth guess.
As far as my second point goes, most ER Wordles have two other consonants. In JOKER, they are the uncommon J and K. In DINER, the common D and N. That substantially affects how easy the puzzle is to solve.
F and L are among the most common letters in the game, with F being the seventh most common starting letter and L being the sixth most common overall. Finding them should not have been as difficult as with some ER games.
Certain players (but not me) may also have been helped by their choice of the best Wordle starting words: SLATE left just 20 possible solutions today. None of the other top choices were anywhere near as helpful, though, with my STARE leaving me with 181 possibles!
I always play LINED as my second guess in these circumstances, leaving out the R even though it denies me a possible 2/6. That’s a sensible choice, I think, as realistically a 2/6 is not going to happen with one of these words anyway, and it means I can play an extra consonant.
LINED gave me a green E and a yellow L and reduced my options list to just 10. Not bad! But I still didn’t know for sure that this was an ER game, so I played RULER next in order to establish that. The R at the end turned green, the R at the start did not. More surprisingly, the L in the middle stayed yellow; this was not going to be a consonant-vowel-consonant-E-R game today.
That puzzled me for a while – what could go between an L and an E? And then I realized that FLYER would fit. WordleBot told me afterwards that it had been the only solution left to me, and I walked away with a satisfactory 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #758)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #758) was… DROOP.
It’s been a full week since we’ve had a Wordle word containing a repeated letter, but we have one today and the difficulty level has increased accordingly. WordleBot says this one is being solved in an average of 4.3 guesses, which makes it the hardest since FOLLY last Monday – which was, of course, the last Wordle to have a repeated letter in it.
That’s not the only tricky thing about this one, either. None of the best Wordle starting words were in any way helpful – TRACE and CRATE both cut the number of possible solutions to 60, but every other top word was higher – and there are quite a lot of words that have similar formats.
For instance, at various points in the game lots of people guessed DROWN, DROOL and DRONE; people also went for TROOP, BROOD and GROUP. We’re not in -ATCH territory here, but it’s still a word with lots of possibilities.
I really struggled. My start word, STARE, left me with a daunting 123 possibles and just a single yellow R to work with. CRONY, my second choice, was a decent one and gave me green R and O, but still left 16 possible answers. The fact that WordleBot said it would have been one of its top picks, but only gave me a 16/99 score for luck tells the story here.
I didn’t find all 16 possible answers, instead focusing on nine: DROOL, DROOP, GROUP, PROUD, BROOD, BROIL, DROID, GROWL and GROOM. With those in mind, playing BLIMP seemed sensible as each of those letters featured in at least one answer, with P and L in three of them and B in two. In hindsight, including a D would have been a better choice, given that it was in five too.
Still, BLIMP confirmed a green P at the end and left me with just two options: GROUP and DROOP. I couldn’t recall either having been a past Wordle answer, so went with GROUP as the more likely word… and guessed wrong. So, a disappointing 5/6 for me.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
