Wordle hints (game #768) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #768) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is D.

D is the ninth most common starting letter in the game, so maybe slightly less likely than you might expect.

Wordle hints (game #768) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #768) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is O.

O is a middling ending letter. It ranks 12th in this regard, and finishes 58 Wordle answers in total.

Wordle hints (game #768) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #768) is… DISCO.

Here’s another relatively straightforward Wordle word for you, one that contains the standard two vowels and three consonants, no repeats and five pretty common letters. WordleBot says people are solving it in an average of 3.9 guesses, and that feels about right.

That said, this is one of those rare games where AUDIO – not actually one of the best Wordle starting words but always one of the most popular – will have got players off to a great start today. WordleBot says that 5% of all players began with that word, and they will have been left with just three possible solutions for their second guess – which goes some of the way towards explaining the low overall average. ADIEU was also quite helpful, leaving 34 possibles – whereas my pick (STARE) left 56 and WordleBot’s favored SLATE left 64.

Lots of the options I identified ended in a Y, for instance FISHY, PUSHY, BUSHY, FUSSY, MISSY, LOSSY, BOSSY and so on. I decided to play one of them, not because I expected to score another 2/6 but because I needed to work out if the S went in the middle, and indeed whether it contained a Y.

I was right in one regard, but not the other: the S was in the middle, but there was no Y. Still, with no Y in the answer, and with P, U and H also ruled out, I now had just four possible answers to pick from: DISCO, BISON, BOSOM and BOSON.

At which point I should confess that… I only actually found one, DISCO. Quite how I missed the three B-starting words I don’t know, but as it happened it didn’t matter, because DISCO was the answer. That’s another nice bit of luck for me, then – and a slightly undeserved 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #767)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #767) was… HEART.

This is undoubtedly one of the easiest Wordles we’ve ever had… well, so long as you picked one of the best Wordle starting words

WordleBot says it has an average score of just 3.2, which according to my records makes it the fourth easiest ever, behind just ATONE (3.1), BRAID (3.0), PLATE (2.9) and SLATE (1.5). Admittedly, I don’t have a record of every game so far, merely about half of them. But even so, this is clearly on the simpler side.

That said, a lot will depend on your starter word. All of the top ones helped greatly today, and some ridiculously so. TRACE left just one possible solution; CRATE and my pick, STARE, left a mere two. SLATE (8) and CRANE (9) were a little higher, but you’d still have stood a good chance of scoring a 3/6 or higher.

In my case, I had a good chance of a 2/6 – and one that I duly took. Yes, I needed some luck, but I’ve had my fair share of misfortune lately too, so I’ll take it.

My choice was between HEART and TEARY and I was never in any doubt about going for the former. No reason why, beyond the fact that it’s such a common word that I was sure it would be a potential answer, whereas TEARY is maybe a little more marginal. Interestingly, of the 25 people who faced the same dilemma as me (according to WordleBot), 44% went with HEART and 44% with TEARY. The other 12% were split equally between CLOUD, AUDIO and TEARS, none of which make sense to me at all!

Anyway, I scored a 2/6 that was long overdue. This was my first one since FROST more than a month ago (game #731) and ended a run of six consecutive 4/6s. Nice.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
