You might think that you don’t need any clues for Wordle today, but remember: failure in this game is only ever six guesses away.
Below, you’ll find a selection of Wordle hints to guide you in the right direction. You don’t have to use them all, but there are five in total should you need them, covering vowels, starting letter, ending letter and more. And if you don’t have time to play at all, you can see the answer, too.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

S is really not a common ending letter at all – mainly because Wordle generally doesn’t allow plurals. It’s the 15th most likely letter to appear at the end of an answer.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #789)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #789) is… AMISS.
If I got lucky with yesterday’s game – and I did, see below – then I got really lucky with this one.
Not only did my starter word, STARE, leave me with just 22 words but my second guess narrowed that to four. And my third guess… well, it solved it. WordleBot rated me 62/99 for luck today, compared to the 51/99 that I’d achieved on average over the previous 15 games.
Admittedly, I also got a 93/99 for skill, so it wasn’t all luck. But I definitely needed a bit of it, because AMISS isn’t necessarily an easy Wordle. It only has an average score of 4.0, apparently, which surprises me because that places it below SCRUB, INDEX and SNAKY, the previous three. It didn’t feel easier to me when playing it, and the evidence would suggest it should have been harder.
For instance, it has a double S. This is by no means common; there are only 49 answers among Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions that have that letter pattern. The fact that the S is at the end is also relatively uncommon (certainly compared to an S appearing at the start), not least because there are no plurals in Wordle.
Fortunately, a few of the best Wordle starting words made the task a little easier. SLATE left 19 possible solutions, while LEAST (8) was even better. The 22 for my STARE was not too bad, either, but the real stars were ARISE and RAISE (both 1).
I didn’t find all 22 words by any means, but I came up with a few: BASIC, BASIS, BASIN, AMISS, DAISY, NASAL, USUAL and ALIAS. I decided to play NASAL based on the fact that identifying a yellow letter can sometimes be made easier by playing it in two places. It’s a strategy I employ from time to time, usually when I’m at a bit of a loss as to the format the answer might take – as I was here.
NASAL proved a little unlucky, in that it didn’t give me any green letters, but by ruling out both the A and S from some other positions, I ended up with just four remaining solutions.
WordleBot tells me they were ADIOS, ABYSS, ASPIC and AMISS, but I’ll be honest – I only came up with the latter of those. I played that thinking it was the only possible solution and would have been a bit stumped if it hadn’t been right, but it was so I walked away with another 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #788)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #788) was… SCRUB.
This is another fairly difficult one, with an average score of 4.1 according to WordleBot. The word is common and the letters are common, but there are lots of similarly spelled words, and that directly affected my play. I escaped with a 3/6, but that owed a lot more to luck than to good play.
I always start with STARE. It’s one of the best Wordle starting words, although not right at the very top; WordleBot rates it as the 17th best. But today, it performed better than most, giving me a green S and yellow R, and reducing my possible solutions to just 10. Of the best picks, only CARTE and CARET were better (each left eight).
So, I had a huge advantage today, and one that was further improved by the fact that a couple of those 10 options had been past Wordle answers.
On my list were SCRUM, SCRUB, SHRUB, SHRUG, SYRUP, SURLY, SCOUR and SPRIG. The two I’d missed, according to WordleBot, were SCRIP and SCROD.
Now, I don’t have an amazing memory for previous answers, but a few do stick in my mind. SYRUP (game #617) was a relatively recent one that I definitely recalled, so I ruled that out. I also thought SCOUR had been a solution before, so put that on my ‘probably not’ list. But the rest I was less sure about – had SHRUB been an answer? Yes, as it turned out. Had SCRUB? No, as I was to find out.
I could have consulted a list – not least my own – but decided to see what fate dished up instead. I have nothing against people who do look at answer lists, it’s just something I tend to avoid (though I have done it on occasion).
So, my list was now SCRUM, SCRUB, SHRUB, SHRUG, SURLY and SPRIG. I nearly guessed SCRUB next, as it shared the SCRU- bit with SCRUM and the B ending with SHRUB, but I was still concerned that one or more of those answers had appeared before. So instead I went with SPRIG, which I was fairly sure hadn’t. That was wrong, but ruled out SHRUG and (unknown to me) also SCRIP.
So, I now had five: SCRUB, SCRUM, SURLY, SHRUB and SCROD. I still hadn’t thought of the latter, so was really picking from four. And I still had a nagging sense that SHRUB had been an answer before.
So I went with SCRUB – the answer that seemed the most likely out of those options and that unlike SURLY would point the way to the right one if it was wrong. But it wasn’t: all five letters turned green and I gladly took my 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
