Wordle hints (game #790) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #790) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is E.

We don’t get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it’s the most common letter in the game, it’s only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

Wordle hints (game #790) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #790) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Wordle hints (game #790) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #790)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #790) is… EXACT.

You wait ages for an X to appear in Wordle, then two turn up in a week!

In truth, that X is the only major complicating factor in this game, which WordleBot says people are solving in an average of 3.9 guesses – so slightly below the 4.0 dividing line between easier and harder.

E is not the most common starting letter – it’s just 14th in this regard – but many people will have one in the starting word somewhere, and the other three letters are all very common.

This is also a game where several of the best Wordle starting words helped greatly. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left just eight possible solutions, while CRANE (5), TRACE (2), CRATE (3), CARTE (5) and LEAST (2) were all better still. My pick – STARE – was slightly behind that at 12.

The challenge for me was therefore to find the right second guess that would eliminate lots of those options. My usual instinct is to play a spoiler word that couldn’t be right but that would move me in the right direction. That’s what WordleBot said it would have done, by playing LUNCH.

I didn’t do that today, though, instead deciding to go for glory and playing TEACH. I knew that a C was a likely inclusion, because it appeared in EXACT, ENACT and TEACH itself. I knew that H was likely because it was in DEATH, HEATH and (again) TEACH.

That said, I also had DEALT, LEANT, MEANT and MEATY on my list, and TEACH wouldn’t help much with them. But sometimes a 2/6 seems tantalizingly within reach and I couldn’t resist going for an actual solution.

TEACH wasn’t right, but I got lucky anyway – the C turned green, which left me with just two options: EXACT and ENACT. A 4/6 was therefore the worst score I could now get (no shame in that), but I had another slice of luck when I played EXACT and got my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #789)

In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #789, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was A.
  • There was one repeated letter in yesterday’s Wordle.
  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was S.
  • Yesterday’s Wordle answer is wrong in some way.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #789)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #789) was… AMISS.

If I got lucky with yesterday’s game – and I did, see below – then I got really lucky with this one.

Not only did my starter word, STARE, leave me with just 22 words but my second guess narrowed that to four. And my third guess… well, it solved it. WordleBot rated me 62/99 for luck today, compared to the 51/99 that I’d achieved on average over the previous 15 games.

Admittedly, I also got a 93/99 for skill, so it wasn’t all luck. But I definitely needed a bit of it, because AMISS isn’t necessarily an easy Wordle. It only has an average score of 4.0, apparently, which surprises me because that places it below SCRUB, INDEX and SNAKY, the previous three. It didn’t feel easier to me when playing it, and the evidence would suggest it should have been harder.

For instance, it has a double S. This is by no means common; there are only 49 answers among Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions that have that letter pattern. The fact that the S is at the end is also relatively uncommon (certainly compared to an S appearing at the start), not least because there are no plurals in Wordle.

Fortunately, a few of the best Wordle starting words made the task a little easier. SLATE left 19 possible solutions, while LEAST (8) was even better. The 22 for my STARE was not too bad, either, but the real stars were ARISE and RAISE (both 1).

I didn’t find all 22 words by any means, but I came up with a few: BASIC, BASIS, BASIN, AMISS, DAISY, NASAL, USUAL and ALIAS. I decided to play NASAL based on the fact that identifying a yellow letter can sometimes be made easier by playing it in two places. It’s a strategy I employ from time to time, usually when I’m at a bit of a loss as to the format the answer might take – as I was here.

NASAL proved a little unlucky, in that it didn’t give me any green letters, but by ruling out both the A and S from some other positions, I ended up with just four remaining solutions.

WordleBot tells me they were ADIOS, ABYSS, ASPIC and AMISS, but I’ll be honest – I only came up with the latter of those. I played that thinking it was the only possible solution and would have been a bit stumped if it hadn’t been right, but it was so I walked away with another 3/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
