V is a fairly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. There are only 43 answers that begin with a V, and it ranks just 16th.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #795)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #795) is… VERVE.
OK, now this is a really tough one. WordleBot says people are completing it in an average of 5.1 guesses – so even higher than MAGMA on Saturday.
In many respects, it’s a similar game to that one, though, with one repeated vowel and one repeated consonant, meaning you had only three letters to find in total. Of course, working out which three they were was a different matter entirely, not helped at all by the fact that one of them was the uncommon letter V. That alone explains why it’s seemingly harder than MAGMA, which had a score of 4.9.
While none of the best Wordle starting words greatly narrowed down the options, some fared better than others. CARTE was the pick of them – that left just 22 answers – but most were in the 40-60 range: CRATE and TRACE (43), CRANE (47), STARE (52).
The latter was my opening guess, as always, and it left me with a lot of work to do. Most of my options appeared to have the format -R–E, for instance CRIME, GRIME, PRIME, FROZE, DIRGE, BROKE, CURVE and so on. There are lots of letters that can go before an R, and lots that can go before an E, so really I was in the dark here.
So, I followed up with a word that couldn’t have been the answer, but that should have moved me towards one. But nope, that didn’t work!
POUND drew a complete blank, and though it reduced my options list (to 11, according to WordleBot), I still had no idea what the format was – beyond the fact that it could still have been an -R–E word. So I continued on that track, playing CRIME and failing to uncover any more letters. Plus, the R stayed yellow, so it turned out I still didn’t know what kind of word pattern it had.
Slightly panicked, I started looking for words that would fit, and came up with just two: VERVE and VERGE. That was a relief, as it meant I couldn’t lose – well, unless I’d missed an option. Fortunately, I hadn’t. Unfortunately, it took me another two guesses to establish that VERVE was the answer, meaning I only scored a 5/6. On the other hand, that was below average, so I’m not really complaining.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #794)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #794) was… SPICE.
This is a classic Wordle. Not too difficult but not too easy either, rewarding smart play but no so unforgiving that too many people will risk a failure. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.9, placing it right in the middle of the difficulty range.
Letter-wise, it’s on the easier side; S is the most common starting letter, E the most common ending letter, P, I and C all common in general. But on the flip side, it’s a game where there are lots of similarly spelled answers, which immediately makes it more difficult than it would otherwise be.
Obviously this will depend on how your game goes, but if – like me – you had the S—E elements early on, you’ll still have had dozens of possible answers. And that’s because there are lots of letters that follow an S at the start of a word.
The choices after an S are the five standard vowels, plus W, T, P, H, L, C, N and M. So, about half of the alphabet in total. I’d ruled out the A and the T with my opener, STARE, but the others were all possibilities. WordleBot said that left me with 32 possibles, despite my having two greens already.
SLATE, the best Wordle starting word overall, was in the same ballpark, with 36 options, while SLANT had a whopping 96. However, some words that didn’t begin with an S fared much better: CRANE left just 11 possibles, while TRACE (17), PLATE (18) and PLANE (19) were not too bad either. The best of the top choices? TRICE, which reduced the options list to a mere four.
I didn’t find all 32 of those options, but I came up with enough that I knew it wasn’t worth me guessing for a 2/6. Instead, I tried to find a word that narrowed down the field quickly. I went with CHIMP – SC, SH, SM and SP were all starting combinations, and I featured in many of the answers. WordleBot said this was a solid choice (it preferred PLINK), but that it was lucky. And indeed it was: it gave me a green I, yellow C and yellow P, which meant I now had all five letters in the format S-I-E. It didn’t take a genius to rearrange them to make SPICE and score a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
