Today’s Wordle answer (game #826)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #826) is… CAROL.
You might have thought the New York Times would have saved today’s Wordle for Christmas, but no – here we are in September with CAROL as the answer. Not that I’m complaining, because it gave me my third 2/6 in succession, a sequence I’ve never achieved before as far as I’m aware.
Before you all accuse me of cheating (and I understand why you might be suspicious), there is a reason why I scored that 2/6. But I’ll come to that in a minute.
Regardless of my own good fortune, this is another fairly straightforward game. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.8, making it slightly harder than yesterday’s BRUSH (3.6) and a bit more so than Thursday’s STONE (3.4), but still below the midway point for the game of 4.0.
As you can see, it has the classic Wordle word format of consonant-vowel-consonant-vowel-consonant. All five letters are common and there are no repeats. There’s nothing to fear here, beyond the sheer number of words that contain some combination of those letters.
That’s evident in the performance of some of the best Wordle starting words. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left a hefty 73 possible solutions, while my choice (STARE) was at 82. But others fared much better. CRANE (10), TRACE (16), CRATE (11) and CRONE (also 11) were all quite successful, while CARTE and CARET both cut the options to just five.
With 82 words to pick from, I had no real chance of guessing the right one. So I didn’t try. Instead, I played the word that I know from previous games has the best chance of further narrowing down the options. That word is CAROL, and I also played it second last time I had a yellow-A, yellow-R opening. Don’t believe me? Here’s the screenshot of my game #817:
On that day, it could only help me towards a disappointing 5/6 for RAYON. Today, however, it proved exceptionally lucky, giving me that WordleBot-beating 2/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #825)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #825) was… BRUSH.
I don’t get a lot of 2/6s in Wordle; in 628 games, I’ve scored 32 (compared to 273 3/6s). That’s partly because I play in quite a cautious way, focusing on preserving my streak rather than getting the highest scores. (Although it’s obviously also because scoring a 2/6 is a lot harder than getting a 3/6!) Anyway, yesterday I went against type and got a two – and today I repeated the feat.
Admittedly, today’s game could be another fairly easy one for most people. WordleBot, the NYT’s online helper tool, says it has an average score of 3.6, well below the 4.0 mark that tends to indicate that puzzles are getting a little harder. That follows 3.4 for yesterday’s STONE (see below) and 3.1 for Tuesday’s CLOSE (via a detour for Wednesday’s SNARE, which was at 4.0). So, we’re in the midst of a quite easy streak here.
BRUSH looks like it might be harder in some ways; there’s no A or E in it, and H is not such a common letter as the others. What’s more, the best Wordle starting words didn’t do such a great job of narrowing down things as they have in recent days. My choice, STARE, was the best performer – leaving me 17 possible answers. But the likes of SLATE (64), CRANE (66) and TRACE (60) were all fairly high.
So, why the low score? I honestly have no idea, beyond the fact that BRUSH is a common word that people may have thought made a good second guess, only to find out that it was indeed a very good second guess.
That’s exactly what happened to me: with yellow S and yellow R, I started thinking about the likely locations for those two letters. R is very common in position #2, where it regularly follows C, B, T, G, F or P. In fact, it’s the third most likely letter to appear in that spot, behind only A and O.
As far as S goes, when it doesn’t appear at the start of a word it’s invariably in position #4; there are 171 games in which that happens, compared to 16 games where it’s second, 80 where it’s third and 36 where it ends an answer.
So, I was looking at -R-S-, and BRUSH seemed a good next guess; I figured that would indicate whether I had the letter placement right, and whether the SH combination was the correct ending. And… well, I lucked out. Not only was it the right format but it was the right answer and I scored a very fortunate 2/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
