Wordle hints (game #872) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #872) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is N.

N is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Only 37 games begin with it and it ranks just 18th in this regard.

Wordle hints (game #872) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #872) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is A.

A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of 63 in which you’ll find an A there.

Wordle hints (game #872) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #872) is… NINJA.

Wow! Today’s game is the 312th so far in 2023, and according to my records NINJA is the equal 11th most difficult in that time.

Want proof? Well, WordleBot, the NYT’s know-it-all AI helper tool, reveals the average score of each game, based on the totals of all those who played it. I maintain a list of those scores, so that I can place each game in context.

NINJA has an average score of 4.7, WordleBot says, so by that measure, the only tougher ones this year have been JAZZY (5.5), RIPER (5.4), JOKER (5.4), NANNY (5.2), KAZOO (5.1), VERVE (5.1), COWER (5.0), FROZE (4.9), MAGMA (4.9) and DADDY (4.9). BORAX, FOLLY and BROOK, meanwhile, all matched NINJA on 4.7.

As regular Wordlers are no doubt aware, that list above is a veritable rogue’s gallery of past answers. Some of those have been truly hateful: RIPER and FOLLY were both 6/6 scores for me, while most of the others were 5s.

One thing that many of those words have in common is a repeated letter: of the 13 answers listed above, nine have a repeat. Another regular feature is an uncommon letter, specifically an X, Z, Q or J. Five also have one of those.

NINJA, bless its cotton socks, has both a repeated letter (N) and an uncommon letter (J) – so it’s no surprise that people are finding it a tough nut to crack.

It’s certainly not a game that many of the best Wordle starting words helped with. Only two of WordleBot’s top 20 options cut the remaining answers list to below 20, namely SAINT (13) and LANCE (9). Neither of those are particularly popular choices, though, and the likes of SLATE (197) and CRANE (63) left plenty of solutions.

That was also the case with my opener, STARE, which gave me only a single yellow A and which left 186 options. This is the same pattern as the one we had for MANIA on Saturday, and as with that day I followed up with BADLY. On that day, it cut my options list to 25 but I was somehow able to turn that into a 3/6 score due to a massive bit of luck on my third guess.

This time, BADLY left me with 28 answers, so even worse than on Saturday. And this time, there was to be no reprieve. I went with AMONG next, which I figured was a good bet because all four of the ‘new’ letters were relatively common. And it was a good guess, in that it cut my remaining answers to two: NINJA or UNCAP. But it wasn’t correct.

Still, I did get lucky with my fourth guess, going with NINJA because I decided UNCAP might not be an actual answer whereas NINJA probably would be. My hunch was right, so I scored a 4/6 on a day when that actually proved to be a decent result.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #871)

In a different time zone where it’s still Tuesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #871, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was L.

L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.

  • There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #871)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #871) was… LIMIT.

Repeated letters usually indicate a more difficult game, but that’s not really the case with LIMIT, which has an average score of 3.8 according to WordleBot.

That low average is all the more surprising given that I is not a particularly common letter to be repeated either; only 24 of Wordle’s original 2,309 answers contain more than one I, so it occurs in only around 1% of all games.

So, what’s going on here? Well, my guess is that it’s a word that doesn’t have many similarly spelled alternatives, and that therefore plenty of Wordlers didn’t have a lot of options to pick from for their second or third guesses.

That will certainly have been the case if you started with SLATE or SLANT, two of the best Wordle starting words, which left only 16 or 12 solutions respectively. The results were even better for LEAST or LEANT, which left only two solutions apiece.

STARE, which I began with, was a different matter: I had only a single yellow T to work with, and faced a choice of 119 possible answers.

I decided to go with POINT, which WordleBot said was an “excellent choice”, but it was a little unlucky. Yes, it gave me a yellow I and turned the T green, but it still left eight options.

Worse still, some of those eight options fit into a nasty pattern of -IGHT words: FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, WIGHT, TIGHT. The other three, which didn’t worry me so much, were LIMIT and CUBIT (which I found) and DIGIT (which I didn’t).

I decided that I had to allow for that -IGHT pattern or risk spending repeated moves chasing the first letter around the board. To that end I played FILMY, which would confirm if the I went second and also rule in/out LIGHT, FIGHT and MIGHT.

This worked wonderfully well: the L and M both turned yellow, which immediately meant that the answer had to be LIMIT – so I played that next for a 4/6.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
