New Hulu movies: the best films to stream in December 2023

These are our six top picks of all the new Hulu movies you can watch on the streaming service this month:

The Bourne Trilogy

Release date: December 1

Under The Bourne Trilogy banner, you’ve got The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum movies, which are all now streaming on Hulu. Easily one of the top franchises in the spy thriller genre, the Bourne movies follow the story of Jason Bourne (Matt Damon), a CIA assassin suffering from dissociative amnesia desperately trying to uncover the truth of his identity while being pursued by government forces.

Expect intense action sequences, complex plot twists and a portrayal of espionage that feels authentic – at least to regular viewers. If you’re looking for a captivating story with top cinematography and fantastic performances from Damon, as well as Jeremy Renner, Julia Stiles and Brian Cox, then watch The Bourne Identity. We bet you won’t waste a second bingeing the second and third movies straight after.

There are two other movies in the franchise after the original series, The Bourne Legacy and Jason Bourne, but they’re not available for free on any streaming platforms right now. Are you confused by all of these titles? You’re not alone. That’s why we created our guide to every Jason Bourne movie ranked from worst to best to help you decide which instalments are worth your time.

The Matrix Original Trilogy

Release date: December 1

The second trilogy in our guide this month, The Matrix Original Trilogy, has landed on Hulu. It includes The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, and The Matrix Revolutions. Directed by the Wachowskis, this series of movies follows the story of Neo (played by Keanu Reeves) as he learns that he’s living in a dystopian world where reality is a simulated illusion known as “the matrix” that’s been created by AI to harvest humans as a source of energy.

The Matrix Original Trilogy is a big, bold science-fiction franchise that feels fresh and relevant nearly 25 years after the original hit cinema screens, making a major impact on popular culture and many works of action and science-fiction that followed it. But as well as action sequences, cutting-edge special effects and a focus on the dangers of artificially intelligent machines, the trilogy has a lot of philosophical depth, exploring themes of identity, freedom and the nature of reality. If you’re looking for a science-fiction franchise with revolutionary visuals and a deeply engaging story, you’ve found it.

If you enjoy the original trilogy, you should watch the fourth instalment, The Matrix Resurrections, which came out in 2021. Look at our The Matrix Resurrections review to learn more about the movie, set sixty years after The Matrix Revolutions.

Paddington 2

Release date: December 1

Paddington 2 is a heartwarming family film, so we’re glad it landed on Hulu in December in time for Christmas. The sequel to the original Paddington movie, Paddington 2 continues to follow the adventures of the marmalade sandwich-loving Peruvian bear. This story is about Paddington being falsely accused of stealing a book and his quest to clear his name. This movie has a fantastic cast, with Ben Wishaw voicing our favorite marmalade-munching hero and Hugh Grant playing the villain.

Paddington 2 is a feelgood classic packed with charm, warmth and smart humor that will appeal to all ages. Do you still need convincing that this film is worth your time? Well, in April 2021, Paddington 2 knocked Citizen Kane off the top spot of aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes’ rankings.

Crazy Rich Asians

Release date: December 6

Crazy Rich Asians is a rom-com that’s packed with glitz and glamor. Based on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name, it follows the story of Rachel (Constance Wu) as she travels with her boyfriend Nick (Henry Golding) to Singapore to find that he’s from an incredibly wealthy family that’s filled with complexities and drama. Think a modern-day take on the woman-meets-her-Prince-Charming story.

This film may look lavish and opulent, but it also explores themes of love, family dynamics and identity. It’s also groundbreaking because it’s a major Hollywood movie production with a majority cast of Chinese descent. Choose this movie if you want an extravagant, funny and, at times, extremely heartwarming story that features a fantastic ensemble cast, including Gemma Chan, Awkwafina and Michelle Yeo.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Release date: December 25

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a movie about the golden age of Tinseltown. It follows the story of a fading actor called Rick Dalton (Leonardo DiCaprio) and his friend, stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt). Directed by Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill), the film focuses on their lives in the movie industry and friendship set against the backdrop of 1969 Los Angeles. Cliff and Rick aren’t based on real people, but there is some revisionist history, culminating in a finale that reimagines the tragic events of the Manson Family murders.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a must-watch on Hulu for cinephiles and those enamored with Hollywood’s golden era. But remember, this is a Tarantino movie. So, as always, expect the hallmarks of his signature storytelling style, like dark humor, lengthy dialogue, and a lot of gritty and intense violence.

Zombieland: Double Tap

A still from the movie Zombieland: Double Tap in which the main characters, Little Rock, Wichita, Columbus and Tallahassee, are all walking solemnly side by side.

The movie Zombieland: Double Tap has an all-star cast, including Abigail Breslin, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg and Woody Harrelson.  (Image credit: Sony Pictures Releasing)

Release date: December 31

Zombieland: Double Tap is the sequel to Zombieland and we’re happy to report it’s as funny and action-packed as the original, blending horror with comedy. The movie reunites Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson), Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), Wichita (Emma Stone), and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) as they do their best to navigate a zombie-infested United States. Except this time round you’ll also find fresh characters, evolved zombies and new dynamics have been added to this post-apocalyptic comedy.

Expect funny banter, over-the-top zombie slaying, and plenty of irreverent humor. Whether you loved the original Zombieland or want a quirky, undead adventure to enjoy this weekend, this is one of our top picks of the best Hulu movies this month.
