S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle‘s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #917)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #917) is… SLOPE.
Ho ho ho hum! It’s another straightforward game today, with our favorite (indeed only) WordleBot reporting that it has an average score of 3.2. Wow – 3.2! Yes, that’s really low. Then again, it’s the second such puzzle in the past week, with TABLE also having that average.
Like TABLE, it contains three letters that are very common among the best Wordle starting words, and two more that are somewhat common – and that was enough to make it a simple solve for most people. Examples? Well, SLATE left only four possible answers: SLOPE, SLIDE, SLICE and SLIME. Given that it’s usually the fourth most popular first guess, behind ADIEU (boo!), AUDIO (hiss!) and STARE (yay!), plenty of people will have started the day with a 3/6 or even a 2/6. The likes of SLANT and STALE were also successful today.
STARE was less fortunate, leaving 32 answers – but that’s still far from panic-stations territory. In fact, by playing PINCH next I was able to reduce that pool to three, SLOPE, SPOKE and SPUME.
I could see that was the case, but dismissed SPUME as being unlikely. It might be a genuine Wordle answer, but the other two seemed far more realistic options, so I decided to go for one of them. But which? Well, SLOPE had the more common letters, and that was about as far as my reasoning went. Sometimes it works, sometimes not – and today it did. All five letters turned green and I scored a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #916)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #916, too.

T is one of the most common starting letters in the game, beginning 149 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. That gives it a ranking of fourth in the alphabet, behind only S, C and B.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was H.
H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #916)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #916) was… TOUCH.
I spent a fair bit of time yesterday bemoaning the fact that Wordle is now too easy – only to then score a 5/6 the very next day. I think that could be described as irony. Or maybe justice.
TOUCH is actually easier than yesterday’s BUILT, according to WordleBot; it apparently has an average score of 3.5, compared to 4.0 for the previous day’s answer. But that wasn’t my experience at all.
Then again, I didn’t begin with TRACE – the third best Wordle starting word according to WordleBot, and one which today reduced the options to only two. TRICE went one better and left only a single answer.
STARE was a lot less useful for me, leaving 119 answers. This was the same scenario as yesterday’s, so I again played POINT. But where yesterday it had cut the number of possibles to four, here it still left 15; WordleBot said it was an “excellent” choice, but unlucky, and I’m not going to disagree.
My third guess was pretty good – I could see that quite a few of the remaining answers contained an H and a U, for instance TOUCH, TOUGH, YOUTH and MOUTH. I had also scribbled down the likes of BOTCH, BOOTH and MOTTO, so THUMB covered a lot of bases.
It was so close to doing the job I’d wanted it to, but not close enough: the combination of green T, green U and yellow H meant I now had only two answers left: TOUCH and TOUGH. But there was no way for me to choose between them, because I couldn’t recall either having been a past Wordle answer. I could of course have consulted a list – such as the one I maintain myself for other players on this very site! – but I generally choose not to do that. If I had looked, I’d have found that TOUGH was an answer, back in March (game #640). And if I’d have known that, I’d have played TOUCH next and scored a 4/6. Instead I had to settle for my second 5/6 in a week. Easy, eh? Well now I look stupid!

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2023.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
