L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #930)
Today’s Wordle answer (game #930) is… LUNGE.
We’re firmly in the Wordle heartland here: LUNGE has two vowels and three consonants in a classic format with an E at the end. It contains no truly uncommon letters, no repeats, nothing to be scared of.
That probably explains why its global average, according to WordleBot, is 3.8 – and why it’s therefore some way below being a difficult game. That said, few of the best Wordle starting words had they impact they did with yesterday’s puzzle (see below), which is why most people will probably have found it harder than that one.
I say ‘few’ of the best Wordle starting words helped, because one certainly did; LANCE left players with only one answer and therefore a guaranteed 2/6 score. But LANCE is not a common opener. CLONE and PLANE, which both left three answers, and LEANT (which left eight) were also pretty handy.
My randomly chosen starting word was EATER. For the second day, this meant that I only had four letters to gain information from, rather than three. On the plus side, I got a yellow E from it. On the minus side… well, as WordleBot told me later, it was very unlucky and left me with 195 possibles. Wow!
Fortunately, my second guess was a lot more successful – and then some. I played CLING, reasoning that all five letters were common, and was spectacularly lucky. Three more letters turned yellow, and when I spent a few minutes arranging my four yellows into various combinations, I realized that they would only assemble into one word. Yes, really – I jumped from 195 to one in a single guess.
This was an unexpected result for me, because four yellows without any greens can usually make multiple words. And when I played LUNGE, I strongly suspected that I’d have missed at least one other option and would have to settle for a 4/6. But I needn’t have worried – LUNGE was indeed the only answer left, and I played it next for my 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #929)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #929, too.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #929)
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #929) was… SCANT.
The thing about picking Wordle start words at random is that they can really make the game tough. Today’s puzzle was a case in point: my computer told me I was starting with… wait for it… APNEA. Hmmm. So that’s a start word with two As in it, which is not great. And those As are at the start and end of the word, where they aren’t all that common. Thanks very much, Wordle gods.
On the plus side, APNEA does contain four common letters, so it wasn’t a total disaster. But if you’re looking at the image of my game above and wondering why it took me five guesses to solve a Wordle that has an average score of 3.5, well that’s why.
SCANT shouldn’t have caused most people too much trouble. All five letters are regular visitors to Wordle answers, S is the most common starting letter of all, T is the third most common ending letter.
Those of you who are playing one of the best Wordle starting words – i.e. not APNEA – might well have been very pleased with the results for your first guess. SLATE, WordleBot’s favorite, left only 15 possible answers, but there were even better returns for CRANE and SLANT, which left only one solution, CRATE (which left 2), CARET and CRONE (both 3), LEAST and STALE (4), TRACE, LEANT and STARE (all 5) and CARTE (7). In short, almost all of the top choices cut down the remaining options to single figures.
Meanwhile, I had 95 options open to me – and a traumatic experience ahead of me.
I didn’t have enough info to bother coming up with a shortlist – I could see the options would be measured in the dozens – so instead focused on finding some more letters, and hopefully turning my A and N green.
I succeeded on the former but not the latter, with NASTY giving me yellow S and T but leaving the N and A the same color.
WordleBot told me afterwards that I now had six words open to me, but I could only find five: STAND, STANK, SLANT, SCANT and STAIN. The one I’d missed was, apparently, TRANS.
What I probably should have done next was to play a throwaway word that would guarantee me scoring a 4/6 – maybe CLINK, which would have given me the C in SCANT, or the K in STANK, the L in SLANT, or the I in STAIN. However, I didn’t know that I hadn’t missed lots more words, so instead guessed STAND in order to see if I was on the right track.
WordleBot said this was an excellent choice, but unfortunately it still left two choices: SLANT and SCANT. This was exactly the scenario that I didn’t want, because I had a straight 50/50 and I just knew I’d guess incorrectly. That was exactly what happened, so I had to settle for a disappointing 5/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
