New Disney Plus movies: March 15, 2024 update

This week’s update might be one of the most significant in a long time because of who’s involved: pop megastar Taylor Swift. That’s right, the hugely popular, multitalented artist is the latest musician to see one of their concert films – The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version) – join Disney Plus. As such, it’s the latest entry in this guide.
New Disney Plus movies are regularly added to one of the world’s leading streamers – this week’s entry, though, is a particularly significant one.
Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version), a live concert film recording of the pop sensation’s current music tour, has joined Disney Plus‘ movie back catalog. Okay, it’s not one of those classic new movies you’d expect to see in an article like this but hey, given how universally adored Taylor Swift is, we felt it right to include it.
If you’re one of the few people on planet Earth who isn’t a ‘Swiftie’, you’ll probably want to steer clear of it and watch one of this guide’s other new Disney Plus films instead. US readers should be aware that some of the entries on this list are available viewable on Hulu, by the way, so bear that in mind before you load up Disney Plus to find something worth watching.
New Disney Plus movies: March 2024
Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)

Not content with conquering the music world, pop superstar Taylor Swift wasn’t too far off dominating the film industry in late 2023, either. Indeed, the predecessor to this lengthier concert film – Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour – earned over $260 million at the box office last year, which made it the 11th highest-grossing film of last year.
Now, a longer version of Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour is available to stream exclusively on Disney’s primary streaming service. Dubbed Taylor’s Version, is comes packaged with five additional songs – the fan-favorite ‘Cardigan’, plus four acoustic numbers – that takes its runtime to a whopping three hours and 30 minutes. Grab your beverage of choice, plenty of snacks, and invite your friends around for a Swifties watch party to check one of the hottest new Disney Plus movies this year. Poor Things

A wildly creative, outlandishly funny, and Frankenstein’s Monster-inspired flick, Poor Things is a freakishly brilliant movie that deserves every award it’s won so far this year.
Stone (The Amazing Spider-Man, La La Land) plays Bella Baxter, a young woman who’s brought back to life by eccentric scientist Doctor Godwin Baxter (Dafoe). Desperate to enjoy all of life’s frivolities, Bella disobeys her father’s orders to stay at home, and chooses instead to run away with debaucherous lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Ruffalo) on a whirlwind, continent-spanning journey of self-discovery.
Hailed by critics and general audiences alike – it currently holds 92% and 79% scores respectively on Rotten Tomatoes – Poor Things is a triumph for visual storytelling, practical effects and sets, and reinventing a classic tale of what it means to be human. One to add to your new Disney Plus movies watchlist ASAP (NB: Poor Things was released on Hulu in late February, so you can stream it now stateside, too).

Morbius

One of many Sony-created Spider-Man movie spin-offs that are – how can we put this politely – awful, Morbius is now available to stream (and laugh at) on Disney’s primary streaming service.
Leto stars as Doctor Michael Morbius, a geneticist whose attempt to cure his rare blood disease turns him into a living vampire. When his surrogate brother Milo (Smith) also becomes a more menacing, blood-sucking, superpowered individual after having the same treatment, Leto’s Morbius reluctantly becomes an anti-hero to stop his sibling’s rampage across New York City.
Arguably the world Spider-Man spin-off thus far (Madame Web runs it close), Morbius‘ abject 15% critical score on Rotten Tomatoes speaks to how bad it is. Its 71% audience rating suggests otherwise but, believe us, it’s not worth an ounce of your time. Stick one of the best Spider-Man movies on or, alternatively, find out how to watch the Spider-Man movies in order. Doing either is better than wasting your time with one of this month’s new Disney Plus movies.

New Disney Plus movies: February 2024
Suncoast
Release date: February 9 (streaming on Hulu in the US)
Runtime: 109 minutes
Age rating: R (US) / 16-plus (UK)

Cast: Nico Parker, Woody Harrelson, Laura Linney, and Ella Anderson
20th Century Studios’ latest dramady is, given its story and thematic content, one you’ll certainly need to be in the right frame of mind for. Indeed, it’s equal parts a weepy drama and heart-warming dark comedy, so we advise you to be in the mood to laugh and/or cry if you stick it on.
Suncoast stars Parker (The Last of Us) as Doris, a struggling teenager who feels overlooked by her mom Kristine (Linney) due to the latter looking after her disabled son 24/7. When Doris strikes up an unlikely friendship with eccentric activist Paul (Harrelson), though, she finds a new way to look at and approach life.
Suncoast was fairly well-received by critics (its 76% Rotten Tomatoes score proving as much), but it’s been eaten up by general audiences, as evidenced by its 84% rating on the same review aggregation website.

The Marvels
Release date: February 7

Cast: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, and Samuel L. Jackson
Following a terrible box office run that earned its the worst-performing theatrical release in Marvel‘s 16-year history, The Marvels has cut its losses and made its Disney Plus debut.
Primarily a sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, it sees Larson’s superpowered Carol Danvers team up with Parris’ Monica Rambeau (the grown-up daughter of Danvers’ late best friend) and Vellani’s Kamala Khan to thwart a new Kree threat. That individual is Ashton’s Dar-Benn, who wants to usher in a new dawn for the Kree empire at the expense of other worlds – and, potentially, the multiverse itself.
With its 62% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes and abject $206.1 million box office takings, The Marvels doesn’t rank highly in our best Marvel movies list. Audiences enjoyed one of the studio’s breezier big-screen offerings far more than critics, though, so it’s a Marvel Phase 5 flick that’s worth streaming if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
