Today’s Wordle answer (game #1113) is… SCOFF.
As if to show how variable Wordle can be, today’s game is the hardest in nearly a month, following one of the easiest in ages yesterday.
SCOFF currently has an average score of 4.5, making it the most difficult since the nigh-on impossible MANGA (4.8) on June 10. It’s probably on the next tier down from that, given that S is the most common starting letter in the game, and that both C and O are in the top 10 too, but the repeated F at the end is undoubtedly a major complication.
Plus, as I found out myself, it’s not the only word that begins SCO. You could also have had SCOUT, SCOLD, SCOOP, SCOWL, SCORN, SCONE, SCOPE, SCOOT or SCOUR, for instance, and all were played in varying numbers by Wordlers today.
Going by probability alone, SCOFF is the least likely of them, as none of the others have that double F at the end. Sure, a few do contain a double O – but as I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, this is a fairly likely occurrence, with 81 games containing two Os. In contrast, only 22 feature more than one F.
I was one of those who went for a more likely option first, except with the added ignominy of trying two of them before I found the answer.
My game started off badly, with my random opener being RENAL of all things. This drew a blank and left me with 301 possible solutions, which was not ideal. Most of WordleBot’s top 20 were below 100, for instance CRANE left 70, STARE left 80 and CRATE/CARTE/CARET left 64. Only SLICE got the shortlist down to manageable figures (21), however.
After that awful start, though, I had a massive slice of luck on my second guess, playing SCOUT – because the letters were all among the most common ones remaining – and seeing the first three turn green. This cut my options to two, SCOOP and SCOFF, and – you guessed it – I went for SCOOP first.
This was a little annoying, but I’ve beaten a couple of 50/50s lately, so it’s only fair that I lose some too. And I was still able to play SCOFF next for my four.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1112)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1112) was… CRUSH.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a truly easy Wordle answer – but CRUSH is here to end that trend. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.6 [note: revised to 3.5], which is the lowest since SAVOR 10 games ago (also a 3.6).
That should not surprise anyone who regularly reads this column. As I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, CR is the third most common starting combination, appearing 45 times across Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions. What’s more, SH is a pretty likely combo at the end: it’s ranked 27th but with 27 entries it’s still a regular visitor to the game.
Put those two combinations together and sandwich a vowel into the middle and you have CRUSH, a word that really shouldn’t challenge anyone today. It certainly won’t trouble those of you who began with CRANE, because you only had 13 possible answers. STARE, with 17, and RAISE with 16 were also notable winners.
What about me? Well, my random word generator threw up BALSA, which was not a roaring success in comparison. It wasn’t a disaster – I now had 106 options – but I was going to need some luck if I was to score a 3/6.
And that’s exactly what I got with my second guess, TOUCH, which reduced those 106 choices down to a single option.
My reasoning for choosing TOUCH was that I had a green S in position #4. There was a good chance it would be followed by H, for SH, or T, for ST, so I wanted to include both of those. I nearly played THOSE, so as to also include an E, but decided it was a waste to use the already-green S at this stage, and would be more sensible to play a new letter.
WordleBot, meanwhile, preferred ROUTE – but I went with my instinct and was rewarded with green U, yellow C and green H. It quickly became apparent that CRUSH was the only possible choice now, so I played it next for a 3/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
