Wordle hints (game #1231) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #1231) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is S.
S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle‘s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
Wordle hints (game #1231) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #1231) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is H.
H is a regular visitor to the final spot in a Wordle word. It occurs 137 times at the end of a Wordle answer, making it the sixth most common letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1231) is… SIXTH.
My run of excellent scores had to end eventually, and it did here with a word that currently has an average score of 4.2. The fact that it’s relatively high is no surprise to me, given that it contains an X – the third least common of all letters in Wordle, ahead of only Q and J. X only appears 37 times in the game’s 2,309 original solutions, and this is the 22nd of them. So on the plus side, we’re well over half of the way through them all.
The X is just about the only complication here. H is not a particularly common letter either, but when paired with a T at the end of a word it’s the 14th most likely ending combination. Given that it also pairs often with S, and that both S and T are in the word today, I’d have expected plenty of savvy Wordlers to have included it fairly early on.
That’s exactly how my game went, at least. I began with VICAR, which gave me a green I but nothing more, and which left 164 options. But I simply played the odds on guess number two, going with STONE in order to rule in/out as many more common letters as I could. That gave me the S (green) and T (yellow), and narrowed down my shortlist to five, according to WordleBot.
At the time I didn’t have five on my list, though – only three, SIGHT, SIXTY and SIXTH. The other two were apparently SILTY and SITUP, which I suppose is a valid word when used as a SITUP, rather than to SIT UP. Either way, I missed it.
I played SIGHT, which would have guaranteed me a solve in four based on my three words, and though it wasn’t correct it pointed me to the correct answer anyway. I played SIXTH next for my just-below-par 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1230)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1230, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was W.
W is a fairly average letter when it comes to starting an answer. There are 82 solutions that begin with a W, with means that it ranks 13th – so right in the middle of the alphabet.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.
D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1230)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1230) was… WEIRD.
It was October 31, Halloween, Hallowe’en, All Hallows’ Eve, All Saints’ Eve… whatever you want to call it. And the NYT marked the occasion with a Halloween-themed solution. Or did it? Is WEIRD a good Halloween word? To my mind it certainly is, because the theme tune of the greatest spooky film ever, Ghostbusters, contains the lyrics “If there’s something weird / And it don’t look good / Who you gonna call?” So yes, let’s consider WEIRD a Halloween word.
Is it a difficult word? Well, it probably depends on what your first guess was. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.7, which makes it a reasonably easy one overall, but that average will have been brought down by the fact that ADIEU and STARE, two of the three most commonly played opening words, left 14 and 13 answers respectively. Given that the likes of CRANE (191 answers) and SLATE (328) left a far greater total, I reckon this will be an opinion-splitter.
You certainly don’t want to use my game as an example of how easy it is, because I scored a two for the second time in three games, after another incredibly lucky start. My random word generator gave me WHARF, which would not usually be a particularly good word to begin with, but which left only two possible solutions, WEIRD and WORRY.
With Halloween in mind I played WEIRD, and that proved to be the right answer.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
