Today’s Wordle answer (game #1360) is… SPITE.
Commonality doesn’t always equal easiness, but in the case of today’s format it certainly does. I’m talking, of course, about the S—E format, featuring the most common first letter and the most common last letter.
I’ve crunched the numbers in terms of frequency and S—E is by far the most likely starting-and-ending combination, with 74 games among the original 2,309 solutions. Here’s the top 20 for you, in case you’re interested.

SPITE is the 50th such word to appear so far, and of those 50 I have a WordleBot-approved average score for 41. And their average is a measly 3.6 – so very easy indeed.
I don’t know that it’s officially the easiest starting-and-ending format in the game, because I haven’t worked out the numbers for that (yeah, I’m lazy) but it must be up there.
Today’s is no exception, with an average of 3.3 at the time of writing. I completed it in three myself, though admittedly I had a big slice of luck at the beginning, when my randomly chosen STEER gave me a green S and yellow T and E, and left only nine options.
It was far from the only success among the best Wordle start words, either. SLATE, STARE and STALE left only four, for instance. Poor old WordleBot fared less well with CRANE, which left 128, and had to settle for a four.
I had no such problem, despite coming up with only five of the nine options: SUITE, SLATE, SPATE, SPITE and SMITE. I missed SKATE, SMOTE, SAUTE and SETUP, which was rather slack of me – but it didn’t matter in the end.
That was because my second guess of SUITE left me a 50/50 between SPITE and SMITE, and I correctly guessed that it was the former not the latter. Happy days.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1359)
In a different time zone where it’s still Sunday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1359, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an R to make GR— or an L to make GL—, but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.
- There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1359) was… GREED.
We all make mistakes sometimes, so don’t judge me too harshly for yesterday’s game, which was a bit of a stinker for me.
Admittedly, GREED is another fairly tough Wordle, with an average score of 4.1 – so the same as Saturday’s NAVEL. It has a repeated letter E, and a common format that takes in several other words with only one letter changed: GREEN, GREET, BREED, FREED and CREED.
However, it shouldn’t have been a game that I scored a five on – and the fact that I did was down to a shoddy bit of play on the third guess.
My opening word, CRUMP, was “distinctive” and fairly average, giving me one green letter and leaving 157 options. I like an R in the second position, because there are only a handful of letters that can go before it, typically T, C, P, B, D, F and G, with W and the vowels as less likely possibilities.
I included both T and D in my second guess, TONED, together with a couple of vowels and the N that I thought might go at the end (as in DROWN or BRAIN). I was wrong about the N, and wrong about the D going at the start, but it did turn green at the end, with an E before it.
This gave me -R-ED and surely a four beckoned, at worst. And then, inexplicably, I failed to find almost all of the possible words.
WordleBot told me afterwards that there had been seven at this stage: GREED, FREED, BREED, ERRED, IRKED, DRIED and FRIED. Yet I only came up with the last two of those.
I think the problem was that I forget a repeated E was possible, so instead focused on IE words. If I had spotted BREED, GREED and FREED I’d definitely have picked a different third guess, but as it happens I went for DRIED… and when the I stayed gray, realized my mistake.
This was a disaster, and the only option now was to play a narrowing-down word – in this case BEFOG. That gave me the yellow G that told me the answer was GREED, but solving it in five did not put me in the best mood for the day.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
