This Super Bowl Sunday, kick back, relax, and enjoy an…Edward Scissorhands sequel? Well, OK!
In a commercial for Cadillac aired ahead of Super Bowl LV, Academy Award-nominated actor and rumored Willy Wonka Timothée Chalamet takes on the role of everyone’s favorite misunderstood multitool in an elaborate ad for hands-free driving. (OK, technically speaking, he’s “Edgar” not “Edward” Scissorhands, but the character is practically identical. I think maybe he is Kim and Edward’s son? Still, we’re not counting that as canon.)
Opposite real Edward Scissorhands star Winona Ryder, who played Edward’s love interest Kim in the 1990 fantasy film, Chalamet portrays what it would be like for a younger Scissorhands to grapple with modern life. Gone are the days of topiary, dog grooming, and hair cuts; here are the days of snipping bus pull cords, overachieving at the salad bar, and, fittingly, puncturing a football.
Whether you like the car being sold or not, it’s a remarkably well-crafted throwback to everything that made the original Tim Burton film so memorable. The soft orchestral music, the pastel-painted houses, the genuinely funny sadness of a dude with scissors for hands: They nail it all.
Looks like Michael B. Jordan, who played Amazon’s Alexa in a steamy ad aired last week, may have some competition for breakout performance of the 2021 Super Bowl — but there’s plenty of ads to see so we’re not retiring the trophy quite yet.
