Director Makoto Shinkai (and chair) at the LA premiere for the English dub of Suzume.

Since 1998, Makoto Shinkai has grown to become one of Japan’s most celebrated creators in the animation space thanks to works like Weathering With You, Your Name, and 2022’s Suzume (which released earlier this year for international audiences). After last week’s news that Suzume would be returning to theaters for a limited time, Crunchyroll’s announced a museum installation dedicated to his films.

The one-day installation will appear at Los Angeles’ Academy Museum of Motion Pictures on Sunday, November 19. Attendees will be able to see the filmmaker’s starting proposals and early sketches from eight of his films, along with their respective storyboards and final materials. The press release notes the installation will “traverse his growth as an animation artist and storyteller,” particularly highlighting how Japan’s 2011 earthquakes has come to affected his works. Suzume is one such film directly influenced by those events and their aftermath, something Shinkai was candid about in the film’s pre-release interviews.

While the full list of included movies haven’t been revealed at time of writing, both the 2002 film Voices of a Distant Star and Suzume are confirmed. During the installation, the museum’s Ted Mann Theater will hold a trio of retrospective screenings for Weathering, Suzume, and Your Name, in that order. (Both Weathering and Your Name’s screenings will be open to the general public, but Suzume’s will be private to those who RSVP for the entire installation.) Shinkai himself is said to be attending the event as well.
