It’s been the same story since May: We’re all looking for ways to get outside and get in the water this summer — in hopes that other people won’t be nearby.

Water sports like kayaking and paddle boarding are fun (and potentially muscle-building) alternatives to buying a personal pool or hitting up a crowded beach. If you’re not psyched on the idea of rentals in terms of sharing with strangers, buying your own kayak or paddle board guarantees you a go-to summer activity for years to come. REI, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Overstock, and Walmart have both on sale this week.

The best part is that you don’t even need to make the drive to a state park to put them to use: Kayaks and paddle boards create little to no wake and can usually be used safely in ponds, creeks, and canals as well as lakes and oceans.
