“Trump is once again trying to warp reality,” said Seth Meyers in Wednesday night’s A Closer Look segment. “Thirty-seven states are seeing spikes in coronavirus cases, which are up 39 percent across the country. We’re seeing new records for daily cases, deaths are up 13 percent, hospitals in hotspots are overwhelmed — like in El Paso, where there’s been a 300 percent increase in hospitalization since the start of October. But the president has been insisting that despite what you can see with your own eyes, everything is fine. And he’s been whining that the media won’t stop talking about the deadly virus killing hundreds of Americans every day.”

Trump’s latest favorite complaint about the ~ Fake News Media ~ is at least technically accurate: Yes, my guy, the deadly global pandemic is still a major news story, especially the part where your administration failed to contain it. The Late Night team put together a supercut of Trump at several recent rallies, repeating his one-word summary of the current news cycle: literally just saying “COVID, COVID, COVID.”

“Sounds like he’s looking at a White House staff photo,” the host joked, going into rapid-fire roast mode. “‘COVID, COVID, COVID, jail, COVID, COVID, fired, COVID, son-in-law, COVID.’ He’s jealous of a virus! He sounds like he’s complaining to his agent about an actor who got a part he wanted… Trump is so mad he’s gone full Hodor. He sounds like a character from the COVID expansion pack for The Sims.”

Elsewhere in the segment, Meyers detailed Trump’s warping of the reality that he might be legitimately voted out of the White House — and how that warping is being supported by one of the three (THREE) Supreme Court justices Trump’s appointed in his four-year term.

“Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote one of the sloppiest, most incoherent opinions in recent memory, repeating the Trump claim that ballots counted after election day are somehow ‘suspicious,'” Meyers noted. This was in reference to SCOTUS’ refusal this past Monday to extend a Wisconsin ballot deadline, and Kavanaugh’s claim in his written opinion that ballots being counted after election day could “flip” the results of the election.

“What are you talking about?” said an incredulous Meyers. “If there are more ballots to count, then that means there are no results to flip! That’s like ending a football game after the third quarter because fourth quarter touchdowns would ‘flip’ the score, which is ridiculous and also impossible if you’re playing the Jets.”

“The plan is clear,” Meyers concluded. “Trump and the GOP are doing everything they can to suppress and undermine mail-in voting, hoping they can prematurely declare victory on election night with the help of the Supreme Court.”
