What: Godzilla vs. Kong

Where to watch: In theaters and on HBO Max

Premiere date: March 31, 2021

Get your popcorn ready: The first big huge titanic blockbuster of spring/summer 2021 is set to arrive in the form of Godzilla vs. Kong, the latest Warner Bros. Pictures flick to get a dual streaming and theatrical release.

Starring Alexander Skarsgård, Rebecca Hall, Stranger Things‘ Millie Bobby Brown, and Brian Tyree Henry of Atlanta fame, the epic monster smackdown pits the gargantuan gorilla from Skull Island against the (very angry) 36-story sea monster in what’s supposedly their final face-off. How can I watch Godzilla vs. Kong?

Godzilla vs. Kong will hit select theaters and HBO Max on Wednesday, March 31. (It was originally slated for a March *2020* release, but Warner Bros. delayed its premiere multiple times because of the COVID-19 pandemic.) Don’t forget your mask if you venture out to see it on the big screen.

I know nothing about ‘Zilla and Kong beyond their cameos in Jay-Z’s “Monster” verse. How can I get up to speed?

Funny you say that — Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ shared Godzilla/King Kong universe is actually known as the “MonsterVerse.” There are three other movies in the franchise, all of which are available for rental or purchase on Amazon Prime Video and YouTube: 2014’s Godzilla, 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, and 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

What are people saying about the movie so far?

Mashable entertainment reporter Proma Khosla recently rounded up a list of critics’ initial impressions (which you can peruse here), noting that while “responses to the film’s cast and plot varied, audiences agreed that the promised action sequences deliver.” Some highlights:

  • “I’ve seen #GodzillaVsKong and it is grade-A awesome! The monster brawls are badass & beautiful — huge fights, all well designed & super gnarly. Solid story, strong cast, really good score. A true Midnight Monster Movie & my favorite of the four modern Godzilla/Kong movies.” — Erik Davis, managing editor at Fandango

  • “As expected – and probably as it should be – the titan fights are the best parts of #GodzillaVsKong. [Director] Adam Wingard definitely has the eye to make the most of those moments! Still don’t think they’ve nailed how to incorporate human characters, but the top-notch ensemble helps.” — Perri Nemiroff, senior producer at Collider

  • “I absolutely hated the prior Godzilla movie. So here’s the utmost praise I can give a movie like GODZILLA V. KONG: it is a coherent movie with daytime fights and I could always see what was going on. I truly mean that as a compliment.” — Mike Ryan, senior entertainment writer at Uproxx
