This year was a hot mess inside a dumpster fire inside a train wreck, a whirlwind of warm sewerage and festering refuse that left nobody untouched. Any review of 2020 will probably be at least a bit depressing, but at least Jimmy Fallon’s musical summary is catchy.
Big Mouth‘s Andrew Rannells joined Fallon on Monday to recap 2020 in song, performing a suite of Broadway musical parodies highlighting just how absolutely garbage the last 12 months have been. The tributes ran the gamut from The Sound of Music to Wicked to a Book of Mormon Zoom call, showcasing musical theatre highlights alongside 2020 lowlights.
“I am not throwing away my shot!” Rannells and Fallon sang, parodying Hamilton‘s “My Shot” as they skipped around with prop coronavirus vaccine needles. “Hey yo I trust Dr Fauci / It’s just a little ouchie / And I’m not throwing away my shot!”
Weirdly, 2020: The Musical skips over the global police brutality and racism protests that dominated the middle of the year. You’d think it would at least warrant a nod, particularly since so many of the shows referenced dealt directly with race — including Dreamgirls, Hairspray, and West Side Story.
