The show’s editing is probably the weakest aspect of it. There are frequently weird, odd pauses that – for a show where rhythm is as important as it obviously is – kinda sink forward motion at the worst times. This meme definitely points that out.
But I also feel like the show isn’t that off from the original – which was also kinda dumb and weird in superficial ways that were easier to gloss over 1) because it’s a hyper-stylized anime from the late 90s and 2) the pacing was just sharp as a razor and always on point, so anything that might otherwise jump out at you as weird just flew by too fast to care that much.
Live action Bebop gets better as it goes, and I feel like it’s settling into its own thing (which it definitely needs to become if it’s going to make it to, and then past, a season 2) but a lot of the complaints I’ve seen surrounding the show are complaints that seem to be less about what’s not working here, and more about working from a fond, rose-tinted and nostalgic handicap for what the anime was, as if a lot of this weird dumb shit wasn’t baked into that as well.
