There’s definitely a current trend in TV opening credits. If the show’s crime-related, the opening tends to feature a bunch of creepy overlapping images that fade and morph, True Detective-style, with details that we’ll inevitably come to understand later.

If it’s fantasy, though, you’d better brace for a booming Game of Thrones or The Witcher-style score coupled with some slowly panning shots of moody scenery, armor, or insignia plus the odd dragon or two.

As you can see from the video above, this is very much the route that Dragon’s Dogma — Netflix’ upcoming anime adaptation of the Capcom role-playing game — has gone down. It notably has all the slowly revealed but shadowy elements of the narrative ahead that we’ve seen in opening credits for shows like Daredevil, Westworld, and even The Crown, all wrapped up into one. It’s a real go-to these days.

These credits feature plenty of string music, a fair few grimy skeletons, and a final shot that’s ominous enough to sear itself into your memory.

Dragon’s Dogma comes to Netflix Sept. 23.
