New Hulu movies: the best films to stream in February 2024

These are our six top picks of all the new Hulu movies you can watch on the streaming service this month:

Call Me By Your Name

Release date: 2017
Main cast members: Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg
Rotten Tomatoes score: 94%

Call Me By Your Name is a heartbreaking coming-of-age romance directed by Luca Guadagnino (Suspiria, A Bigger Splash) that was a huge hit with critics and audiences alike when it was released in 2017.

Based on a book of the same name, the movie is set in 1983 in Italy and follows the story of the romantic relationship between 17-year-old Elio (played by Timothée Chalamet) and 24-year-old Oliver (Armie Hammer), who is working as an assistant to Elio’s father.

Be warned, Call Me By Your Name is gut-wrenchingly sad at times, but it’s also a beautiful exploration of first love, identity and sexuality that you’ll be thinking about long after the credits have rolled.

Jumanji

Release date: 1995
Main cast members: Robin Williams, Kirsten Dunst, Bonnie Hunt
Rotten Tomatoes score: 51%

It’s time to start monkeying around with the fun and thrilling family classic Jumanji. This fast-paced movie suits all ages, which is why it’s been a firm favorite with audiences since its release back in 1995. Now it’s available on Hulu it’s one to add to the watchlist, even if you’ve seen it hundreds of times before.

Jumanji follows the story of a mysterious board game that brings characters, wildlife and weird and wonderful threats from the jungle into the real world. It centers on Alan Parrish (played by Robin Williams) who is trapped inside the game as a child and then released decades later by two unsuspecting kids. The action and adventure that follows is a whirlwind race against time to finish the game before the jungle madness that emerged destroys everything. It’s a super entertaining blend of heart, humor and high-stakes adventure that’s just as fun on the fifth watch as it was on the first.

The Twilight movie collection

Release date: 2008
Main cast members: Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Billy Burke
Rotten Tomatoes score: 49%

All five instalments of the romance-meets-fantasy Twilight movie saga are now available to stream on Hulu. Based on a series of novels, the Twilight movie collection follows the story of schoolgirl Bella (played by Kristen Stewart) and brooding vampire Edward (played by Robert Pattinson), who strike up an unexpected romance when they meet at their high school in Forks, a small town on Washington state’s Olympic Peninsula.

But lots of things stand in the way of their blossoming romance, including Bella’s friendship with Jacob, her old childhood friend and a member of the Quileute tribe, as well as the fact Edward is a vampire from the turn of the century. The movie collection follows the ups and downs of these two star-crossed lovers as they try and navigate all sorts of obstacles to be together.

These movies aren’t for everyone. But if you want a chilled weekend with teen romance – and the drama that often accompanies it – werewolves and creepy vampires, you’re in for a fun-filled 10 hour+ binge session now the whole saga has landed on Hulu.

12 Years a Slave

Release date: 2013
Main cast members: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Lupita Nyong’o, Michael Fassbender
Rotten Tomatoes score: 95%

Based on the memoir of the same name, 12 Years a Slave follows the story of an African American man called Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the mid-1800s. It shows the unrelenting cruelty he experienced both at the hands of conmen and plantation owners.

The director of 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen (Shame, Hunger), was highly praised for the movie, as were the cast. Ejiofor gave the performance of a lifetime as Northup, Lupita Nyong’o plays enslaved woman Patsey who experiences horrendous treatment at the hands of plantation owner Edwin Epps, played by Michael Fassbender.

As you might expect, 12 Years a Slave isn’t comfortable viewing. Many parts of it are brutal. However, it’s been praised as one of the most accurate portrayals of the African-American experience, which means it’s a must-watch.

Predator

A still from the movie Predator of the Predator with its mask off and its arms spread out in the jungle, ready for battle.

Release date: 1987
Main cast members: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, Carl Weathers
Rotten Tomatoes score: 80%

Predator is a classic late 80s movie that combines extremely quotable one-liners, high-paced action scenes, science-fiction and a helping of horror. It follows the story of an elite paramilitary rescue team who are on a mission to save hostages in a Central American rainforest.

Headed up by Dutch Schaefer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), the team end up getting much more than they bargained for when they encounter a mysterious and deadly Predator with highly-advanced technology and creepy cloaking abilities that hunts them down one by one.

If you love Predator, we highly recommend watching more of the movies that followed, which are set in the same universe. In our opinion, the best is the most recent 2022 movie Prey. A prequel to Predator, Prey is set in the Northern Great Plains of 1719 where a young Comanche woman encounters the Predator.

Nomadland

A still from the movie Nomadland of Frances McDormand as Fern in a desert.

Release date: 2020
Main cast members: Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, Bob Wells
Rotten Tomatoes score: 93%

Nomadland is one of the newest recommended movies on Hulu this month and it’s a must-watch for its powerful exploration of nomadic life. The movie follows the story of Fern, played by Frances McDormand, a widow who decides to leave her life in Nevada and travel around the United States in search of work in her van.

This Oscar-winning movie blends non-fictional elements with fictional storytelling, and the result is a highly immersive and emotional journey. There’s top acting here – as well as from plenty of non-actors, to further add to the realism – and stunning cinematography that is both dream-like and captures the breathtakingly vast landscapes of the American West.

At times this is a heavy movie, exploring themes of loss, homelessness and desperation, but it’s also about the overriding power of resilience and community, too.
