Dirty Dancing is a classic 80s love story starring Patrick Swayze as Johnny Castle and Jennifer Grey as Frances “Baby” Houseman. It tells the story of Johnny and Frances’ summer romance as he teachers her to dance at a resort.

Whether revisiting the classic or discovering it for the first time, Dirty Dancing is an emotional coming-of-age story that blends mesmerizing choreography – including that iconic lift – with an unforgettable soundtrack. It’s no surprise that Dirty Dancing has become a cultural phenomenon over the decades.

Godzilla vs. Kong

Release date: January 1

Godzilla vs. Kong is an epic monster movie that pits two iconic titans against each other in a spectacular battle for dominance. Directed by Adam Wingard, the film delivers jaw-dropping visual effects and epic showdowns between the classic, colossal monsters, Godzilla and Kong.

Expect thrilling action scenes, some seriously impressive CGI and a storyline that won’t set the world on fire, but delivers if you’re looking for a monster movie with bite. If you’re wondering where this film fits into the monster movie franchise, then it’s a sequel to Kong: Skull Island (released in 2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (released in 2019), which also landed on Hulu this January.

Heat

A still from the movie Heat in which Robert DeNiro's character Neil McCauley is running down a street wearing a suit and holding a machine gun.

Release date: January 1

Directed by the incredibly talented Michael Mann, Heat is a favorite among film fans, and for good reason. This 1995 crime thriller follows the story of a skilled group of bank robbers led by Neil McCauley (played by Robert De Niro), and Lieutenant Vincent Hanna, the detective on a relentless mission to catch them in the act (played by Al Pacino).

Heat is an edge-of-your-seat movie thanks to its intense cat-and-mouse game – seriously, the on-screen chemistry between De Niro and Pacino is palpable. But there are also incredibly well-executed action sequences here as well as deeply moving, quieter scenes that explore the complex lives of the main characters. Heat really is a timeless classic.

Hook

Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman as Peter Pan and Captain Hook.

Release date: January 1

Get ready for a hefty dose of nostalgia with the classic 1991 fantasy adventure and family favorite film Hook, which arrived on Hulu at the beginning of the year. Directed by Steven Spielberg, Hook is a whimsical and imaginative twist on the classic Peter Pan tale, acting as a sequel to the classic story we all know and love.

The film follows the story of an adult Peter Pan (played by Robin Williams) who must rediscover his childhood wonder to save his kidnapped children from the evil Captain Hook (played by Dustin Hoffman). Expect humor, adventure, fantasy and lots of fun for the whole family thanks to the incredibly watchable cast and timeless message about the importance of embracing your inner child.

Release date: January 1

X-Men: First Class is a Marvel superhero film that explores the origins of the iconic mutant team, paying close attention to the complex early relationship between Charles Xavier (Professor X, played by James McAvoy) and Erik Lehnsher (Magneto, played by Michael Fassbender).

It’s set against the backdrop of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Charles and Erik must join forces to prevent a global disaster. It’s a compelling watch with some good performances, an interesting storyline and plenty of visual effects. We’d recommend it for everyone, even if you’re not already a fan of the X-Men. But if you are, X-Men: First Class may not be the best film in the franchise, but is a fun one to watch and better understand these much-loved characters.

King Richard

A still from the movie King Richard showing Will Smith as Richard Williams surrounded by school children.

Release date: January 24

If you want to watch a powerful drama towards the end of the month, you’re in luck. King Richard follows the compelling story of Richard Williams, the father and coach of tennis legends Venus and Serena Williams.

Will Smith delivers a stellar performance as Richard in this biographical movie, giving us an insight into his determination and the unconventional methods he used to nurture his daughters’ tennis talents. Even if you’re not all that interested in tennis, King Richard explores the challenges the Williams family faced, but also emphasizes the unwavering belief they had in their daughters’ potential. It’s an immensely watchable and heartwarming film all about the power of resilience and familial bonds.
