New Hulu movies: the best films to stream in March 2024
These are our six top picks of all the new Hulu movies you can watch on the streaming service this month:
Batman Begins
Release date: 2005
Main cast members: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Liam Neeson, Katie Holmes, Gary Oldman and Cillian Murphy.
RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score: 85%
Batman Begins is the first movie in Christopher Nolan’s Batman reboot trilogy, known as The Dark Knight trilogy, which was followed by The Dark Knight (2008) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). Because this movie is effectively rebooting the whole Batman saga, Batman Begins shows us Bruce Wayne’s entire origin story with Christian Bale’s first appearance as the infamous caped crusader.
Batman Begins follows the story of the death of Bruce Wayne’s parents through to how he became Batman, culminating in his present day fight to stop Ra’s al Ghul (played by Liam Neeson) and the Scarecrow (Cillian Murphy) from plunging Gotham City into chaos.
Batman Begins may not be as strong as The Dark Knight that followed it – arguably the best movie in the trilogy and one of the best Batman flicks of all time – but we enjoyed Nolan’s fresh perspective on such an infamous character. There are excellent performances here from Bale himself, who is excellently cast, as well as Michael Caine as Alfred, Liam Neeson as Ra’s al Ghul and Cillian Murphy as the chilling villain Scarecrow.
Blackfish
Release date: 2013
RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score: 99%
Blackfish is a 2013 US documentary movie (the reason we haven’t given you cast details) that follows the true story of Tilikum, an orca. It’s not an easy watch by any means, but it’s a compelling and important one as it explores pressing issues about animal rights and the ethics of capturing wild animals.
Tilikum was held by SeaWorld, a huge US theme park, and Blackfish aims to shine a light on the controversy surrounding the orca’s captivity as Tilikum was responsible for the deaths of three people. It follows Tilikum’s story, exploring what may have caused his aggression, including his capture in the 1980s off the coast of Iceland and alleged harassment by other captive orcas at his time in another theme park.
The documentary movie looks at the extreme stress experienced by orcas who are caught in the wild and forced to spend their lives in captivity. It includes footage from some of the attacks on trainers, as well as interviews from witnesses, former trainers and testimonial from experts, including Lori Marino, director of science with the Nonhuman Rights Project.
Blade Runner 2049
Release date: 2017
Main cast members: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas and Robin Wright.
RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score: 88%
Blade Runner 2049 picks up 30 years after the events of the original Blade Runner movie. It follows the story of K (played by Ryan Gosling), a “blade runner” who begins to unravel a mystery that threatens society.
Aesthetically, Blade Runner 2049 is stunning, with all of the rain-soaked and neon-drenched cityscapes that made the original film so iconic, as well as breathtaking new locations, like a dusty and desolated Las Vegas.
Blade Runne 2049 may have divided both critics and fans of the original movie but we think it’s an incredibly smart and fresh take with stunning cinematography and stellar performances from Gosling, Ford, de Armas and Wright.
Dune
Release date: 2021
Main cast members: Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem and Oscar Isaac.
RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score: 83%
A few directors have tried to adapt Frank Herbert’s seminal sci-fi novel Dune for the big screen, but we think Denis Villeneuve’s take is the best (although David Lynch’s take is certainly worth a watch).
Dune follows the story of Paul Atreides (played by Timothée Chalamet), whose family are tasked with ruling the desert planet of Arrakis, a land filled with dangers and an incredibly harsh environment. Events take an unexpectedly violent turn and Paul must fight for his life with the local people or Arrakis, the Fremen.
Expect epic sci-fi storytelling with a haunting soundtrack, excellent performances from the star-studded cast and stunning special effects. It’s filled with action-packed scenes, but it’s also a story with a lot of depth, political intrigue and plenty of subtext about colonialism, power and religion.
Goodfellas
Release date: 1990
Main cast members: Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta and Joe Pesci.
RT (Rotten Tomatoes) score: 95%
Goodfellas is a classic 1990 crime drama from acclaimed director Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon, The Departed, Casino).
Set in a working class neighborhood in 1950s Brooklyn, New York, it follows the story of Henry Hill (played by Ray Liotta) and charts the way he rises up in the Italian mafia working for Paulie Cicero (Paul Sorvino) and alongside his associates and pals, James “Jimmy” Conway (Robert DeNiro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci).
Goodfellas is a must-watch classic, especially if you love gangster movies and slick crime stories. It’s stylish, hard-hitting and many see it as Scorcese’s best work of all time with his signature, freeze frames, fast cuts and long tracking shots. The casting here is excellent, with the three main leads proving why they had such epic and illustrious careers long after Goodfellas hit the big screen.
