New Max movies: the best films to stream in January 2024

The Breakfast Club

Release date: January 1

This John Hughes-directed classic has had a huge impact on similarly positioned coming-of-age movies since its 1985 release, so it stands to reason that it would be one of our spotlighted new Max movies for this month.

Starring the likes of Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, and Paul Gleason, The Breakfast Club tells the tale of five high schoolers – each of whom belong to a different high school clique – who bond during their Saturday detention overseen by their authoritarian vice-principal. Initially frosty to one another, the quintet soon find they have more in common than they realize, especially when it comes to their backgrounds and upbringing.

A seminal comedy-drama that more than deserves its place in the US National Film Registry, The Breakfast Club is a must-see for all movie fans. Expect it to join our best Max movies guide in due course.

Escape from Alcatraz

Release date: January 1

Escape from Alcatraz celebrates its 45th anniversary this year – and, considering it’s a brilliant jailbreak action thriller, it was nailed on to appear in our new Max movies spotlights section.

Based on J. Campbell Bruce’s 1963 non-fiction novel of the same name and real-life events that occurred in 1962, it stars legendary actor Clint Eastwood as Frank Morris, who leads a plot to, well, escape from the US maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island. Fred Ward, Jack Thibeau, Patrick McGoohan, and Larry Hankin are among the supporting cast.

One of the finest prison break movies ever made, Escape from Alcatraz is a highly entertaining, suspense-filled, and cinematically rich movie. If you can look past its all-too-brief ending, you’ll have a great time.

The RoboCop movie collection

Release date: January 1

A beloved sci-fi film franchise for many, all four RoboCop movies are available to watch now on Max.

Set in a dystopian neofuturistic world, the RoboCop series follows Alex Murphy, a Detroit-based police officer who is fatally wounded in the line of duty and subsequently turned into a cybernetically-enhanced supersoldier by mega-corporation Omni Consumer Products (OCP). Each film sees Murphy tackle violent crime and corruption at the heart of the OCP to various degrees.

Equal parts R-rated action, fascinating sci-fi, comedic visual effects, and satirization of consumerism and capitalism, the RoboCop flicks are largely good fun. The first installment is easily the best, two and three have their moments, and four – a reboot of the late 80s/early 90s trilogy – isn’t worth your time.

The Star Trek movie collection (1979 – 2002)

Release date: January 1

This month sees a whole heap of Star Trek movies make their bow on Max (they’re also available on Paramount Plus), but you won’t find all of the legendary sci-fi franchise’s flicks on the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned service.

Thankfully for diehard fans, a number of the best Star Trek films have beamed their way onto the platform, though. All six of The Original Series movies, which were initially released between 1979 and 1991, have joined Max’s movie library. Fans of The Next Generation quadrilogy will also be delighted to hear those movies have also invaded Max’s Alpha Quadrant.

Unsure where to start or which ones are worth streaming? 1982’s The Wrath of Khan, 1984’s The Search for Spock, 1986’s The Voyage Home, and 1996’s First Contact are your best bets. You can take or leave the other six, though you may want to check out 1979’s The Motion Picture first if you’re a first-time Trekkie.
