New Prime Video movies: the best films to stream in January 2024

If Beale Street Could Talk

Release date: January 1

Director Barry Jenkins followed up on the success of his 2017 Oscar-winning flick Moonlight with 2018’s If Beale Street Could Talk, a powerful portrait of love and loss in 1970s New York that deserves more attention that it garnered at the time.

Based on James Baldwin’s novel of the same name, the film stars KiKi Layne as Clementine ‘Tish’ Rivers, a young woman who we follow as she desperately attempts to clear the name of her wrongly charged partner Alonzo ‘Fonny’ Hunt (Stephan James). Diego Luna, Pedro Pascal, Brian Tyree Henry, and Regina King also star in If Beale Street Could Talk, which is anchored by a stellar score from Succession composer Nicholas Britell. A beautifully constructed film adaptation that speaks volumes.

Jumanji

Release date: January 1

Everyone has a favorite Robin Williams movie. As one of the world’s most beloved actors who elevated every movie he was in, you can take your pick from Mrs. Doubtfire to Flubber, and Good Will Hunting to Robots.

Few are as universally adored, though, as Jumanji. In it, Williams portrays the aged-up version of Alan Parrish, a pre-teen who’s sucked (and subsequently trapped) in the titular supernatural board game, in the late ’60s. When two new kids on the block – Judy and Peter Shepherd (Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce) – discover the same table top game 26 years later, they accidentally rescue Alan from his fantastical  prison. However, they also let a bunch of jungle-based dangers loose on the small US town of Brantford, and have to clean up their mess with Alan’s help.

Critics weren’t thrilled with Jumanji upon its initial 1995 launch but, bolstered by Williams’ undeniable star power, it was the 10th highest-grossing movie of that year. Numerous TV and movie sequels have followed since, but this Williams-starring flick will always be the series’ best entry.

The Superman movie collection

Release date: January 1

With a new Superman movie – Superman: Legacy – still 18 months from being released as part of James Gunn’s DCU Chapter One, fans of the iconic Kryptonian will have to make do with some of his former movie outings on Prime Video instead.

Not every Superman film is available to stream, mind you. Flicks starring (or involving) the man of steel in the now deceased DCEU aren’t part of this new Prime Video movies package, so fans of Henry Cavill’s iteration are sure to be disappointed. Still, with five Superman films – the four fronted by Christopher Reeve, plus 2006’s Superman Returns – taking flight on the service, there’s enough here to be wowed by, pick apart, or find so bad they’re unexpectedly funny.

Foe

Release date: January 5

Following its October 2023 theatrical release, this understated sci-fi thriller slides its way onto Amazon’s primary streamer this month.

Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan star as Junior and Hen, a married couple living on the farm formerly owned by Junior’s parents. When the mysterious Terrance (Aaron Pierre) arrives to inform the pair that Junior’s been selected for a space expedition, though, things take a turn for the worse – especially when Junior is replaced by a near-identical robot version of himself to keep Hen company.

Critics weren’t enthused by Foe‘s sci-fi clichés or ponderous plot, but praised Mescal and Ronan’s performances, which may make it worth investing in. Based on its critical reception, however, don’t expect to see it on our best Prime Video movies list any time soon.

Role Play

Release date: January 12

The first Amazon Original movie of the year, Role Play looks like it’ll be the latest in a long line of films to take a comedic stab at the spy thriller genre.

David Oyelowo stars as David, a New Jersey-based husband who finds out his wife Emma (Kaley Cuoco) has been leading a secret life as an assassin for hire since the pair met. Unsurprisingly, he gets caught up in Emma’s affairs as soon as her secret is unexpectedly revealed, forcing the duo to work together, albeit in funny circumstances.

It’s unclear how well Role Play will be received by critics – at the time of writing, reviews aren’t live yet – but we suspect it’ll have enough to entice you to check it out, especially if you’re after a new film to entertain you post-New Year.

Fast X

Release date: January 16

The latest installment in Universal’s hugely popular car-based film series – find out how to watch the Fast and Furious movies in order while you’re here – Fast X races its way onto our new Prime Video movies list for this month.

It wasn’t as good as many people hoped it would be, with fans and critics alike suggesting it wasn’t as high-octane or excitingly over-the-top as previous entries. But, with a gleefully maniacal Jason Momoa on outlandish form as the franchise’s newest big bad and some fairly enjoyable set-pieces, Fast X has enough horse power and speed to deliver a third gear-based flick that’ll thrill diehards. See where we placed every other Fast film in our Fast and Furious movies ranked piece.
