F is a very common starting letter in Wordle. It ranks seventh behind only S, C, B, T, P and A and overall there are 135 solutions that begin with this letter.

• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

• The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1015) is… FORCE.
Here’s another easy Wordle for you – well, if you got lucky with your start word. Several of the top choices left very few options today, including TRACE – which left only one answer and therefore a guaranteed 2/6. With CRANE (5), CRATE (also 5), TRICE (2) and CARTE (also 2) faring almost as well, there will again have been plenty of low scores on offer.
FORCE doesn’t have any real complications. As I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, F is not a common letter in general – but it does often appear at the start of an answer. In fact, it ranks seventh for this, behind only S, C, B, T, P, and A. In contrast, C is more common at the start than it is in the fourth slot, but again it ranks seventh there, so neither was an unlikely letter to turn up. If you played the odds, you’ll have been OK.
My game was fairly mundane: an average start word (TAROT), which left 36 answers, followed up by a decent second guess (SOLED) which reduced those 36 to four.
I could see that my options were FORCE, FORGE, GORGE and BORNE, so decided to narrow them down with BEFOG – a word that I love for its ability to use up three of the middling consonants in one go. BEFOG did the trick, giving me the F that confirmed FORCE as the answer (if it had been FORGE, the G would have turned yellow too).
However, I did make a mistake here – as it happens, FORGE would also have guaranteed a solve on the fourth guess, and would also have given me a chance of a 3/6, whereas with BEFOG I’d waved goodbye to that possibility.
It didn’t matter of course, but it’s a reminder that if you know there are only a few possibilities left that it’s always worth checking to see if playing one of them would guarantee ruling out the others. If one does it’s almost certainly the best option. Still, no harm done and an acceptable 4/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1014)
In a different time zone where it’s still Friday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1014, too.

R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was M.
M is a middling ending letter: it ranks 13th in this regard, and only completes 42 Wordle answers overall.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1014) was… REALM.
A couple of weeks ago I had a frustrating game when the answer was TOXIN. It was frustrating because TOXIN had been my random start word only a week before. Well, history has repeated itself in even more annoying fashion.
Why? Well, REALM was my start word only two days, for STUNG. I’d resigned myself to never scoring a 1/6, but I was so close here. OK, so I wasn’t really close at all – whether I was two days out or 200 days out is irrelevant, the fact is that I did not begin with the right word. But psychologically it felt closer.
Still, I scored a 3/6 anyway, so it wasn’t a disaster. And I very nearly scored a 2/6 – because my actual start word, MORAL, left only three possible solutions!
That was far from an unusual occurrence today, either. STARE, the third most popular opener in the world, left the same number, as did LEAST. STALE was better still at 2/6. CRANE, TRACE and CRATE (all 9) and SLATE (8) were great too. It was one of those days where a good start word really made a difference.
Without one it will have been more difficult, because that M at the end of REALM is not particularly common: as I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer it ends only 42 of Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions, which means that it ranks 13th in that regard. On the other hand, R, E, A and L are all mega common, hence the good results for those start words.
I only found two of the three possible answers that were open to me – ALARM and REALM. The other, WordleBot said, was LAMER. Hmmm. I suppose that is a real word, but I’d be a bit annoyed if it was an answer.
Anyway, it wasn’t today at least, so it’s irrelevant here. I played ALARM as the more common word and though it wasn’t right it confirmed that the answer had to be REALM. If only every day were as simple as this.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
