Wordle hints (game #1093) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has a vowel in one place*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1093) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is G.

G is the eighth most common starting letter, featuring in 115 Wordle answers. It’s often paired with an L to make GL—, but I’m not revealing whether that’s the case today.

Wordle hints (game #1093) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #1093) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is D.

D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

  • My start word performance: OWNER (40)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1093) is… GRIND.

Another easy Wordle following yesterday’s PROUD (see below). And a fairly similar word to that one, too, with a middling letter at the start that’s far more common in that position than it is elsewhere, an R next and a D at the end.

WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.5, which makes it the second easiest in the past month or so, after yesterday’s. It’s not a game I’d expect many people to struggle with.

It took me four guesses, however, with my random start word of OWNER leaving me with just a little too much work to do. I had 40 options after that, whereas the likes of CRANE (17) and TRAIN (9) were significantly more fortunate. As it happens, TRAIN was my choice of second word, and unsurprisingly it helped massively – I now had a green R and yellow I and N, and a mere five words to choose from.

All five of those made their way on to my shortlist: DRINK, BRINK, GRIND, BRING and BRINY. However, I knew that the latter had been a past Wordle answer, not too long ago on game #1064, so ruled that out right away.

This was one of those nice situations where I could now guarantee a 4/6 by playing any of the four words, so there was no particular reason to choose any one of them. I went with DRINK, on a whim, and while it wasn’t correct it gave me the yellow D that meant the answer had to be GRIND.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1092)

In a different time zone where it’s still Saturday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1092, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

P is a very common first letter among Wordle answers. It’s the fifth most common in the alphabet and begins 141 solutions in total.

  • There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.

D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1092) was… PROUD.

It’s been a long, long time since we’ve had a Wordle as easy as this one. WordleBot says PROUD currently has an average score of 3.3, which would make it the lowest since LASER on April 22 (game #1038). We haven’t even had one of 3.5 or lower since PRUNE a week after that (#1044).

So, what makes PROUD so simple? Well, that PR combo at the start might be a factor, given that as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, it occurs 26 times in total. It’s ranked 21st in this regard, which might not sound too high until you consider that there are a total of 214 starting combinations, so it’s within the top 10%. The individual letters are all pretty common in their respective positions, too – P is fifth at the start of a word, R is third in position #2, O is third in the middle, D is eighth at the end.

But a bigger aspect is probably just how common PROUD is as a word. My guess is that it’s the kind of word that people play in order to narrow down the options – and that today, for many, it surprisingly turned green. Kind of the inverse of yesterday’s game (see below), where people played FAULT and needed an extra guess to get VAULT.

Start word performance is unlikely to have influenced matters greatly, given that most of the truly popular openers left something between 50 and 250 options. Or, in my case, 258 options. But my game developed in exactly the way I described above. I played CROFT second, and that cut my possibles list to 18 – which was decent, if not spectacular. But for my third guess, I chose PROUD as a word that might have further narrowed down that list, which contained the likes of BROAD, PROMO, GROUP, DROOP, DROOL and DROLL. I didn’t think it would be the answer – I just wanted to move in the right direction.

Well, I got more than I bargained for, with all five letters changing to green and giving me a 3/6 I scarcely had to work for.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
