Today’s Wordle answer (game #1104) is… ORDER.
I talk a lot about how difficult ER words are compared to most Wordles, and indeed they are: the average for the game overall is around 3.95, but for ER words it’s 4.3. However, that rule doesn’t always apply, and ORDER is a good example of an ER anomaly.
Let me explain. Almost all ER words have the same structure: consonant, vowel, consonant, E, R. However, if you move that first vowel to the start of the word, as it is here, the puzzles seemingly get easier and the average score drops considerably. We’ve had 18 ER words beginning with a vowel so far, 14 of which I have a WordleBot score for. And those 14 were solved in an average of 4.05 guesses – so only just above the overall norm for the game.
As to why this is, my guess is that it’s because when a vowel is at the start, the options for the two consonants shrink. It’s almost always going to be a couple of common letters that pair well together – think the L and D in OLDER, the N and T in ENTER or indeed the R and D in today’s ORDER. When the vowel is second, however, the consonants don’t need to pair, which widens the pool. And as a result, one of those consonants can be uncommon; think the K in BAKER, the V in VOTER or the W in POWER. Occasionally, both can be uncommon; I’m looking at you, JOKER, with your 5.4 average.
All of which goes some way to explaining why ORDER’s average score is only 3.9 at the time of writing. And that’s despite the fact that it has a repeated letter, a factor which usually makes a Wordle harder, and which often makes an ER word nigh-on impossible.
For my own game, there was another factor that made it easy: the fact that my random start word, TREAD, outperformed all of WordleBot’s top 20 and left only 11 possible answers.
That swiftly became two possible answers when I played my second guess, PRIDE, which left me with just ORDER and DRYER to pick from. The former seemed like a more likely solution than the latter, so I went with that and scored an easy 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1103)
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1103, too.

K is not a common starting letter in Wordle by any measure. In fact it ranks 22nd out of 26; a mere 20 answers begin with a K.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was D.
D is a fairly common letter to end a Wordle answer: it’s the eighth most likely to be in that position in a solution.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1103) was… KNEAD.
This is certainly a little harder than Tuesday’s game SAVOR, which ended up with an average score of 3.6. KNEAD, in comparison, is currently at 4.0 and I wouldn’t be surprised if that figures rises as more people play. But while that may be true, I made a bit of a mess of it and had to settle for a distinctly under-par five. Not my finest hour.
The big complication here is the KN combination at the start. This data isn’t detailed in my analysis of every Wordle answer, because I only include the top 30 starting combinations in that page, but I do have the full list squirrelled away on a spreadsheet and can tell you that among the original 2,309 solutions, there are only 10 that begin KN. That means that it ranks equal 87th in this regard, so it’s really not that likely.
This is the fifth of them: KNOLL (game #219), KNOCK (#539), KNEEL (#710) and KNELT (#845) have been the others. So be warned: there are still five more to come.
That’s really the only obvious problem here, other than the fact that KNEAD isn’t that common a word.
Start word performance was middling; SNARE was the best of WordleBot’s top 20, leaving only four possibles, but it isn’t a popular choice; the best of the real favorites was CRANE, which left 30.
My starter word today was CHINA, which WordleBot said was “strong” but which could only cut the shortlist to 117. For my second guess I usually form a word from the most common remaining letters, which today would have been something like SANER. However, for reasons which I can’t entirely fathom, I went for SONAR instead.
This wasn’t my big mistake, though. The ‘bot liked it well enough and it cut the answers list down to 10, which was not too bad. A four should have been achievable from here.
Unfortunately, I rushed the whole thing. My shortlist only had NATAL, NAVAL and VEGAN on it, and among them I decided to play NATAL in order to try to identify where the A went. What I should have done was either to find some more options, which might have led me to make a better guess, or to do what WordleBot did and play VEGAN.
NATAL did narrow down the options but still left four: BEGAN (which I still hadn’t spotted, somehow), VEGAN (which was on my list), KNEAD (which wasn’t) and UNJAM (ditto). In my head, the answer had to be VEGAN – so when it failed to turn green I was fairly aghast.
It took me a bit more searching to realize that KNEAD was an option (the only one left by this stage) and play it next for a disappointing 5/6.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
