Today’s Wordle answer (game #1112) is… CRUSH.
It’s been a while since we’ve had a truly easy Wordle answer – but CRUSH is here to end that trend. WordleBot says it has an average score of 3.6, which is the lowest since SAVOR 10 games ago (also a 3.6).
That should not surprise anyone who regularly reads this column. As I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, CR is the third most common starting combination, appearing 45 times across Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions. What’s more, SH is a pretty likely combo at the end: it’s ranked 27th but with 27 entries it’s still a regular visitor to the game.
Put those two combinations together and sandwich a vowel into the middle and you have CRUSH, a word that really shouldn’t challenge anyone today. It certainly won’t trouble those of you who began with CRANE, because you only had 13 possible answers. STARE, with 17, and RAISE with 16 were also notable winners.
What about me? Well, my random word generator threw up BALSA, which was not a roaring success in comparison. It wasn’t a disaster – I now had 106 options – but I was going to need some luck if I was to score a 3/6.
And that’s exactly what I got with my second guess, TOUCH, which reduced those 106 choices down to a single option.
My reasoning for choosing TOUCH was that I had a green S in position #4. There was a good chance it would be followed by H, for SH, or T, for ST, so I wanted to include both of those. I nearly played THOSE, so as to also include an E, but decided it was a waste to use the already-green S at this stage, and would be more sensible to play a new letter.
WordleBot, meanwhile, preferred ROUTE – but I went with my instinct and was rewarded with green U, yellow C and green H. It quickly became apparent that CRUSH was the only possible choice now, so I played it next for a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1111)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1111) was… DEBUT.
This is not a particularly notable Wordle compared to the interesting selections we’ve had in recent days. It contains no really uncommon letters, has no repeats and includes nothing to mark it out as that complicated. In fact, if you were picking a Wordle puzzle to act as a standard for the game, DEBUT would work nicely.
It has the same average score as the previous two games, THIGH and INLAY, but to mind it’s a little easier than either of them. The most awkward thing about it is probably the B in the middle; as my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, B is very common at the start of a word (third behind S and C), but only occurs 56 times in the center of an answer, which means it ranks 16th in this regard.
It was one I probably should have solved in three guesses, but I had to settle for a four due to an unlucky second guess and a poor third one. That puts it above the average score, which currently stands at 3.9 [note: it ended up at 4.0]. To make me feel a little better about that, though, WordleBot also solved it in four.
However, my start was better than the ‘bot’s; my random opener SHEET left 34 options, whereas CRANE left 273 possibles. I was helped in my quest by the fact that the repeated E in SHEET ruled it out of two positions. Coupled with the green T at the end, I only needed to focus on E—T and -E–T. The former was a lot more likely than the latter, because E appears 241 times in the second position, but only 72 times at the start. So I added in three of the most common letters remaining and played LEANT.
This was a “wonderful choice”, said WordleBot, but also an unlucky one – it did nothing beyond turn the E green, and still left me with 14 possible answers. To make matters worse, I didn’t do a particularly good job of identifying them, coming up with only half of them and playing DEPOT on a whim. WordleBot agreed that it was a little slapdash, saying it was “not my favorite”.
Luck was smiling on me now, though, because poor guess or not it cut my shortlist to only two: DEBUT and DEBIT. And for once when faced with a 50/50 I guessed correctly and scored a 4/6 that was about the most I deserved today.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
