E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1115) is… SHAPE.
S at the start and E at the end is the most common of all Wordle start/end formats, with 74 examples among the game’s 2,309 original solutions – a massive 32 ahead of the second-place S—Y. That’s no major surprise, given that S is the most likely letter by far to begin a Wordle, and E the most likely to end one. When you also consider that SH is the second most common starting combination and A the most likely to be in the middle, you have the ingredients for an easy Wordle.
The average score, as reported by WordleBot, would back up that assertion: it has a current value of 3.7.
It’s one of those games where some of the best starting words made a huge difference. SLATE, WordleBot’s second favorite, and STARE both left 14 answers, although the less likely popular PARSE beat them both, cutting the options to five. Most of the top 20 cut the shortlist to the 30-40 range, so there were plenty of good starts to be had.
Unfortunately, my random word generator didn’t read the script, giving me PUPIL. This didn’t include either an S or E, and left me 96 options. On the plus side, it did gave me a P, which would prove to be very helpful in narrowing down my second guess. I went with SCOPE – reasoning that S and E would be sensible letters to add in – and immediately turned them both green. With P joining them in that hue, I now had only one possible answer left, SHAPE, and played that next for a 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1114) was… CANON.
More repeats for Wordle today, which again raise the difficulty of what would otherwise be a straightforward game. N is almost exactly as likely to be repeated as the F in yesterday’s SCOFF – as I show in my analysis of every Wordle answer, there are 23 of them across the game’s 2,309 original solutions, compared to 22 for F.
That really is the only complication here, though. C is the second most common starting letter, A is most common in position #2 (and second overall), N and O are both top 10 letters overall. As a word, it’s not exactly obscure, but perhaps not as widely used as some.
The net result of all that is that it has an average score of 4.0, a tiny bit above the overall average for Wordle. How well you did may have depended in large part on your start word. If you began with CRANE, you were laughing – because it left only six possible solutions. If you began with STARE, though, you’ll have had 191 of them.
I was in an even worse situation, with 570 options left following my opening HEFTY. This was less than ideal, obviously, so I searched for a good word using the most common remaining letters. These were A, I, O on the vowels side, plus S, R, L, N and C for the consonants. I decided to leave out S, because it’s often paired with T and H, and both were already ruled out. I considered a couple of options, but eventually decided to go with NADIR and was reasonably lucky in that it gave me a yellow N and green A, and cut my options to 15.
For my third guess, I left out the A and N in order to gain information about five other letters. With hindsight, maybe I should have included the N, but LOCUS worked pretty well, giving me two more yellows and cutting my choices to two.
At least that’s what WordleBot told me afterwards; I only found one, CANON, and missed CAPON. I’m 100% certain I would have played the former over the latter anyway, so it had no influence on my game other than the fact that technically I got another 50/50 right.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
