Wordle hints (game #1144) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1144) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is A.

A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.

Wordle hints (game #1144) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #1144) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is L.

L is a really common letter to find at the end of a Wordle. There are 155 games that finish with an L, and it ranks as the fifth most likely letter there.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1144) is… ANVIL.

ANVIL is not a word you hear much these days, is it? I say “these days” as though it was commonly used in my childhood, but I’m not that old. Really my main memory of an anvil is from Looney Tunes cartoons such as Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner, in which the hapless canine would regularly be squashed into the floor by one falling on his head. That said, Katy Perry’s recent single Woman’s World did also feature an anvil falling on her, so maybe that’s why it’s appeared in Wordle now.

Anyway, uncommon word or not, it’s a straightforward Wordle with an average score at the time of writing of 3.9. That’s the same as yesterday’s ENSUE, but I found this one to be much easier. Yes, it has a V in the middle, but otherwise the letters are all common and there are no repeats here.

I scored a three, and that was almost entirely down to my second word. My opener was STARE – which was chosen at random but which is one of the best start words and which used to be my regular pick until January this year. Unfortunately, it was just as unhelpful as the less-heralded words I’m generally given, leaving me a hefty 191 options. That’s frustrating, but suitably random.

I needed a good second guess, then, and got it in the form of CANAL. You might look at it and think it was a strange choice, given it contains two As, and therefore only gave me info about four letters rather than five. However, turning the A green was important, and playing it twice gave me an extra chance to do that. It’s a strategy I’ve employed before, and which does often work; indeed, WordleBot said it was exactly what it would have done too.

The A didn’t change color, as it happens, but the L went green and a yellow N was added into the mix. Better still, the A could now only be at the start of the word, so it was effectively green, even if not literally so. I had AN–L or A–NL to play, then, and quickly spotted that ANVIL was the only possible answer. Yes, I’d gone from 191 to one in a single guess. I played ANVIL next for a much-needed 3/6.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1143)

In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1143, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in three places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was E.

We don’t get many Wordle answers that start with an E – though it’s the most common letter in the game, it’s only the 14th most likely to begin a solution.

  • There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1143)

  • NYT average score: 3.9 (revised)
  • My score: 5
  • WordleBot’s score: 3
  • Best start word performance*: SNARE (2 remaining answers)
  • My start word performance: FRILL (915)

* From WordleBot’s Top 20 start words

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1143) was… ENSUE.

Playing Wordle while tired is rarely a recipe for success. All it takes it one lapse in concentration, one mistake, and your game can go from ‘Yeah, this is fine’ status to ‘WHAT AN IDIOT I CAN’T BELIEVE I DID THAT I AM NEVER PLAYING THIS STUPID GAME AGAIN’.

Guess what happened to me today, then?

Yes, I completely screwed up my fourth guess, playing a word that couldn’t have been the answer because of what I’d already learned about the letters. It’s a long time since I’ve made a mistake of that magnitude, and it was a shame, because I really should have scored a creditable 4/6. Creditable because the overall average for ENSUE is indeed 4.0 [note: revised to 3.9], and also because my first word, picked at random, was FRILL – which left me a whopping 915 options.

The frustrating thing is that my second guess, SATED, was a “terrific choice” that cut those 900-plus options down to 21, and my third was CHOSE, which was a little lucky but which left only one possible answer. That one answer most definitely was not UNSEE, but for some reason I overlooked the fact that the first E could not possibly be in the fourth slot, so played it anyway and had to endure a passive-aggressive telling off by WordleBot. Not the best start to a week.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
