Today’s Wordle answer (game #1195) is… THANK.
Over the past five days we’ve had four of the easiest Wordles this year – TEACH (3.1), STEAM (3.4), TORCH (3.4) and now THANK (3.3), with only HANDY (4.1) to break that up on Tuesday. This is not a common occurrence; over the previous two months we’d only had four more games that had dipped below the 3.5 mark. This kind of thing is to be expected, given that Wordle answers appear randomly, but it can make it hard to write this column because difficult answers are far more interesting!
That’s my problem rather than yours, of course, so I’ll stop complaining and do my best to talk you through why it’s so easy.
It isn’t purely due to the letters in use, because two of them are nestled in the lower half of the rankings when it comes to how likely they are to appear. As my analysis of every Wordle answer shows, H is only the 14th most common letter in the game, and K the 20th.
However… it also is due to those letters, because H and K are both far more likely to appear in these specific positions. Take a look at my article above and you’ll see that H jumps to eighth when used in the second spot in a word, and K to ninth at the end. Plus, T is fifth overall and fourth at the start, A is second overall and first in the middle, and N is ninth overall and second in slot #4.
Why is this important? Well, even if you don’t know how common those letters are in those positions, the words you chose to play will have had a high probability of turning letters green rather than yellow. For instance, lots of Wordle words have an A in the middle: 306 to be exact. For the N in #4, there are 182. So when people played words like PLANT and CHANT and STAND, as they did in fairly high numbers on guesses #2 and #3, they will have got greens rather than yellows – and that will have helped them solve the Wordle more easily.
That’s exactly what happened to me: one green on the first guess, two on the second, five on the third. Easy as A, B, C. Or rather, T, H, A, N, K.
In a different time zone where it’s still Wednesday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1194, too.
