SPOILER WARNING: Today’s Wordle answer and hints are below, so don’t read on if you don’t want to see them.
Wordle hints (game #1291) – clue #1 – Vowels
How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?
• Wordle today has vowels in two places*.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
Wordle hints (game #1291) – clue #2 – first letter
What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?
• The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is L.
L is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. Despite being the sixth most common letter overall, it’s only ranked 12th at the beginning of a word.
Wordle hints (game #1291) – clue #3 – repeated letters
Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?
• There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
Wordle hints (game #1291) – clue #4 – ending letter
What letter does today’s Wordle end with?
• The last letter in today’s Wordle is R.
R is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – it’s actually the 4th most common there, behind E, Y and T.
Wordle hints (game #1291) – clue #5 – last chance

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1291) is… LEMUR.
What better way is there to finish 2024 than by beating both WordleBot and the global average by a full guess? Well, I suppose I could have scored a 1/6, as many, many Wordlers will have done yesterday (see below), but this will do for now.
I’m also delighted that the answer is LEMUR, because let’s face it they are very interesting creatures (and also incredibly cute). The fact that there are around 100 different types of them, pretty much all of which are only found on the island of Madagascar, is amazing. I remember reading about one of them, the aye-aye, in a sort of ‘child’s first nature book’ when I was very young, and being fascinated by its long, thin middle finger, which it uses to dig grubs out of trees. So, it’s a good word and a good Wordle and a good day for me. Hurrah!
It may not be a good day for everyone, because it has an average score of 4.0 – not super-high, but high enough that some people will presumably have scored fives and sixes here. Maybe there were even some failures; after all, it’s not an obvious word, and the UR ending is not common either (it occurs only nine times among the 2,309 original Wordle solutions).
My game was entirely trouble free, though. I began with ODDER – which could have been a disaster, given that the repeated D was very unlikely to help me – and ended up with a yellow E and green R. This was a much better result than if both have been green, because that would have meant I needed to solve a dreaded ER word. Instead, ODDER left me with only 10 possible answers.
I was almost as lucky on my second guess. I played STEAL, leaving out the R in order to include another letter and therefore give myself the best chance of a solve-in-three, and got my wish when that extra L turned yellow. WordleBot told me afterwards that I now had only one possible answer left, and though I didn’t know it for sure at the time, LEMUR was indeed the only solution I could find.
Happy New Year, everyone!

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1290)
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1290, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.
* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).
- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.
S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

- Yesterday’s Wordle answer is to fix your eyes firmly on something.
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1290)
- NYT average score: 3.1
- My score: 2
- WordleBot’s score: 3
- Best start word performance*: STARE (It’s the answer!)
- My start word performance: BIGOT (242 remaining answers)
* From WordleBot’s Top 20 start words
Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1290) was… STARE.
Let’s face it, there will be a lot of very happy people today. Or maybe very disappointed people – after all, what’s left to achieve in this game once you’ve scored a 1/6? But anyway, the key thing is that after 1,291 Wordles (the first was number #0, not #1) the incredibly popular start word STARE has come up as the answer.
STARE is played, on average, by about 5% of all Wordlers – so that’s many thousands of people who will have ticked off ‘Score a one at Wordle’ from their bucket list.
I’m not among them, having stopped using STARE as my opener at the beginning of 2024, having previously used it almost exclusively from the time I started playing in early 2022. However, I do think I played some small role in popularizing its use as one of the best Wordle start words. I began using it in the very early days; I’m not sure exactly when, but it was definitely before WordleBot launched in April 2022. I wrote about why I chose it during my previous role on Tom’s Guide, and again once I joined TechRadar; it was, until today, the best word that hadn’t yet been an answer, but that was definitely going to be an answer one day.
That’s now changed, which leaves LEAST, TASER and PARSE as the statistically best options, in that I think they will all be answers, and all (like STARE) get a WordleBot rating of 97 out of 99. Everything above them – CRANE, SLATE, CRATE and so on – has either already appeared, or is unlikely to do so.
Will thousands of people now switch from STARE to something else? I suspect they will, although once you’ve scored a 1/6 maybe you don’t feel the need to do so again. In which case sticking with STARE makes sense, due to its excellence as a word and the familiarity people will have with it.
I’m unlikely to ever score a 1/6 now, given that I use a random word each day, but I’m fine with that. And besides, I can still use the likes of STARE to help me towards an average-beating result, by playing it second.
That’s exactly what I did today. My opening BIGOT had left me with 242 answers, and given me only a yellow T to go on. But I knew that when T is yellow at the end, your best chance of turning it green is to play it in the second position (where it usually follows S), or at the start (where it often precedes R). I could have picked TRACE, then, but instead went with STARE for old time’s sake – and was rewarded with a lovely 2/6 on one of the lowest-scoring Wordle days ever.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
