Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1336) is… DITTY.
I’m not entirely sure whether the five I scored in today’s game is a measure of DITTY’s difficulty, or my ineptitude, or bad luck. Probably a bit of each, in truth.
It certainly is a tough one, with an average score of 4.5. It’s not quite as bad as Monday’s GOODY (4.8), but harder than yesterday’s RUMBA (4.2, see below), and ends a really tricky week for the game.
I suspect that streaks will be lost today, particularly on hard mode, due to the too-many-answers nature of DITTY; obvious alternatives include WITTY, KITTY, NITTY and BITTY, while DIRTY, DITZY and DIZZY all had their adherents today too.
The fact that WordleBot also scored a five is some consolation to me, but given that my start word, SATIN, left only 23 answers – versus 356 for the ‘Bot’s CRANE – I really should have done better.
My main problem was that I ignored my own advice and my usual strategy, playing for a high score rather than a safe score, and ending up with a poor score.
I’d followed SATIN with BERTH, which was chosen specifically to see if that -ITTY pattern was there; though the T was already green in the middle space, by playing it again in the fourth slot I would reveal the double-T that I feared. The other letters were chosen to rule in/out some of the other words I’d found – for instance the DITCH/PITCH/WITCH/HITCH trap, or LITER/MITER/LITRE, plus the likes of LITHE and TITLE.
BERTH did reveal the -ITTY trap, and left me with only WITTY, DITTY, KITTY and DITTO. That was not too bad – so what I should do now was surely play another narrowing down word to guarantee a four, right?
And I had one: WINDY would definitely reveal the answer, because if the Y turned green it would rule out DITTO, but if not then that would have to be the answer. The D and W, meanwhile, would point the way to WITTY and DITTY (or DITTO depending on the Y).
This is what I always do, and it’s sensible. Safe and sensible. And boring. I wanted a three today, so I risked it all on KITTY. That was wrong, but no matter – I still had a 50/50 to get the four I would have got anyway. So I played WITTY.
Again, no. I was left to play DITTY on the fifth attempt, and in the full knowledge that I could have beaten that score if I’d wanted to.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1335)
In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1335, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

R is a surprisingly uncommon starting letter. Despite ranking third overall in Wordle, it’s merely the 11th most likely to begin an answer.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was A.
A is a relatively common ending letter. It ranks 10th in this regard and today’s game is one of 63 in which you’ll find an A there.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1335) was… RUMBA.
Wordle has a bit of a thing for dances. We’ve now had WALTZ (game #498), SALSA (#606), DISCO (#768), TWIST (#1254), MAMBO (#1289) and now RUMBA, although some of these do have more than one meaning. Maybe Josh Wardle was a big dance fan.
I am not, and almost certainly never will be, a dancer, least of all of RUMBA, which looks incredibly complicated. Nodding my head to rock music is more my style. I did enjoy today’s game from a word-puzzle point of view, though, largely because I massively outperformed the average.
That was mainly due to luck, admittedly. RUMBA is a tricky Wordle with an average score of 4.2 at the time of writing, and it’s one that very few of the best Wordle starting words helped much with. None of WordleBot’s top 20 dipped below 50, and only one popular pick – RAISE – was really very useful; that left a mere five options.
My opening word was not quite as successful as that, but MOWER cut my shortlist to 28, which was a lot better than my experience yesterday (see below).
With a yellow M and R, I knew that my options were limited. ER words were ruled out, obviously, so I focused mainly on R in second and M second-last: GRUMP, TRUMP, FRUMP, CRIMP, CRAMP, TRAMP, PRIMP, CRUMB, CRUMP. But there were other possibilities, including SMRIK, SMART, STRUM, SCRUM, CHARM and PRIMA.
I didn’t find them all, but came up with enough that CRUMP seemed like a good second guess. WordleBot did not agree – PACTS would have been better, apparently – but it cut those 28 options to five, so was far from a disaster.
And then I got really lucky. Those five words were THRUM, STRUM, UMBRA, UNARM and RUMBA, but of those I’d only found two – STRUM and RUMBA. I thought that the first of those might have been a past Wordle answer, but was certain RUMBA had not appeared before and went with that.
I was right in one sense – RUMBA was the answer – but STRUM has in fact not appeared before. And of course when you throw in the fact that I had missed three words entirely, I was really very fortunate to score a three rather than the four or even five I probably deserved.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
