S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

F is not a particularly common ending letter in Wordle. It only ranks 17th in this regard, and a mere 26 of the 2,000-plus original Wordle answers end in this letter.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1375) is… SHELF.
My random-word-as-opening-guess approach doesn’t often yield the best results, but when it comes off the feeling is so sweet that it’s almost worth all of those zero-letter wipe-outs.
Today was one such example, with my random word generator serving me up MOTIF on a day when the solution was SHELF.
Did you know that there are only 26 words among Wordle’s 2,309 original solutions that end in an F? It’s a fact I include in my analysis of every Wordle answer, but I didn’t need to remember the detail to know that there are not many of them.
Many end in a double-F – for instance FLUFF, BLUFF, STAFF, WHIFF, STIFF, SKIFF and SCOFF, all of which have already been answers.
Other F-ending words that have been past Wordle answers include DWARF, CHIEF, THIEF, SCARF, GRIEF, BRIEF and ALOOF; SHELF is the 15th, then, so there are at least 11 still to come.
The rarity of that final letter is probably what propelled SHELF to a reasonably high average score of 4.0 today. Many of the best Wordle start words performed well enough – STARE left 29 and SLATE only eight, for instance – but none will have had that F in place.
My MOTIF did, and that left me a mere 14 to play with. But I’d rather have had 14 with a green F than eight without it, frankly.
All I needed to do was find them, a task I was only moderately successful at. I came up with nine: FLUFF, BLUFF, QUAFF, SCUFF, SNUFF, CHAFF, SHEAF, SCARF and WHARF, but missed DWARF, GRUFF, DECAF and SNARF. Oh, and SHELF, the eventual answer. Whoops!
SCARF was a decent enough second guess, but could have left me with one of three 50/50s. That was almost unavoidable, though; WordleBot suggested BRASH, but that still could have left one of two 50/50s, so was only a little better and couldn’t possibly be correct.
SCARF was not correct, of course, and it did leave me a 50/50 – SHELF or SNUFF. At first I thought the latter was the only option – because I hadn’t thought of SHELF yet – but I took another look before I played, and I’m glad I did.
SHELF seemed a fair more likely answer than SNUFF, so I played that instead and scored a lucky three.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1374)
In a different time zone where it’s still Monday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1374, too.
- Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

- The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was A.
A is a reasonably common starting letter in Wordle: 140 games begin with this letter. It ranks 6th among starting letters, behind S, C, B, T and P.
- There were no repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.
Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.
- The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was E.
E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1374) was… ANGLE.
The most interesting thing I have to say about ANGLE is that it is very similar to Friday’s AMBLE, with three letters in common and in the same places for A–LE.
It’s half a guess easier than that one, though; where AMBLE had a 4.3 rating, ANGLE is at 3.8.
Most Wordlers will obviously have known to avoid playing AMBLE yesterday, but plenty went with ANKLE, APPLE, AGILE, AMPLE and ANGEL. It’s one of those words that has many close cousins.
And actually, let’s call them out here: 2.1% of players went with AMBLE on guess three and another 1.6% on the fourth. What are these people doing? I can only assume that they missed Friday’s game.
My Wordle today proceeded in a different way to that one. AMBLE, for me, was marked by a very lucky third guess, but here it was all about the second.
Admittedly, BUDGE had given me a good start, with a green E at the end and a yellow G. WordleBot told me afterwards that I now had 28 words left, but I didn’t bother looking for them all, instead coming up with EAGLE, ANGLE, GEESE and GOOSE and decided not to overthink it.
Playing EAGLE seemed like a good idea, because it would establish whether there was a repeated E, as well as adding in the generally common A and the L. The latter often pairs with a G, so it made sense to me at the time – although the ‘Bot did admonish me slightly, describing it only as a “solid” guess and stating that it was lucky.
It was certainly the latter – it turned the G and L green, and gave me a yellow A. There was now only one word left to play, which was indeed ANGLE. Easy pickings.

What is Wordle?
If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.
We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.
What is Wordle?
Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?
It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.
Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.
What are the Wordle rules?
The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.
1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.
2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.
3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.
4. Answers are never plural.
5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.
6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.
7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.
8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.
9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.
10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…
11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
