Wordle hints (game #1378) – clue #1 – Vowels

How many vowels does today’s Wordle have?

Wordle today has vowels in two places*.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

Wordle hints (game #1378) – clue #2 – first letter

What letter does today’s Wordle begin with?

The first letter in today’s Wordle answer is V.

V is a fairly uncommon starting letter in Wordle. There are only 43 answers that begin with a V, and it ranks just 16th.

Wordle hints (game #1378) – clue #3 – repeated letters

Does today’s Wordle have any repeated letters?

There are no repeated letters in today’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

Wordle hints (game #1378) – clue #4 – ending letter

What letter does today’s Wordle end with?

The last letter in today’s Wordle is E.

E is the most common letter to end a Wordle answer by far. That’s one of the reasons why many of the best start words, including SLATE, CRANE, CRATE and STARE, all end with one.

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1378)

  • NYT average score: 4.1
  • My score: 4
  • WordleBot’s score: 3
  • My start word performance: SANER (209 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot’s start word performance: CRANE (46)

Today’s Wordle answer (game #1378) is… VERSE.

This is one of those rare days on which I can hold my head up high and say that I genuinely could not have played it any better than I did.

And I have proof of that: WordleBot awarded me a fabled 99/99 skill score.

This does not happen often; my average over the past 15 games is 92, and the last time I achieved top marks was for NAVEL on March 8.

It’s just as well that I did play smartly today, because VERSE is a potentially difficult Wordle. It has an average score of 4.1, and combines a repeated E with an uncommon V.

Throw in the fact that it is has a similar spelling to multiple words including TERSE, VERGE, VERVE, CURSE, PURSE, SERVE and others, and you have a recipe for… well, not quite a disaster, but a tricky game all the same.

My opening guess was not a great one. FABLE gave me a green E at the end, but nothing more, and left 209 possible answers. But WordleBot doesn’t include the first guess in its skill rating, and I use a random word generator anyway, so that failure was not on me.

For the second attempt I went with SNORT. This was a straightforward option based on a few hunches.

With E being confirmed, I didn’t need to play it again, and would probably only need one more vowel. A was ruled out, so O made sense next.

S, N, R and T are all common letters, and all regularly sit before an E at the end of a word. I could have put C in there instead, but SNORT seemed like a good bet and it did pretty well in giving me two yellows.

This cut my shortlist to four words: CURSE, PURSE, VERSE and REUSE. I found them all and knew that I needed to play one of the first two next. Either would guarantee me the answer in four, even if wrong here, whereas the other two might have left a 50/50 and a possible score of five.

I went with PURSE, and though that was wrong it confirmed that VERSE had to be the answer. I only beat the average by a tiny amount, but I’m pleased with my efforts today.

Yesterday’s Wordle hints (game #1377)

In a different time zone where it’s still Thursday? Don’t worry – I can give you some clues for Wordle #1377, too.

  • Wordle yesterday had vowels in two places.

* Note that by vowel we mean the five standard vowels (A, E, I, O, U), not Y (which is sometimes counted as a vowel too).

  • The first letter in yesterday’s Wordle answer was S.

S is the most common starting letter in the game, featuring in 365 of Wordle’s 2,309 answers. In fact, it’s almost twice as likely to begin an answer as the next most common starting letter, C.

  • There were repeated letters in yesterday’s Wordle.

Repeated letters are quite common in the game, with 748 of the 2,309 Wordle answers containing one. However, it’s still more likely that a Wordle doesn’t have one.

  • The last letter in yesterday’s Wordle was T.

T is a very common letter to end a Wordle answer – in fact only E and Y are more likely in that position.

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1377)

  • NYT average score: 3.7
  • My score: 4
  • WordleBot’s score: 3
  • My start word performance: SANER (159 remaining answers)
  • WordleBot’s start word performance: CRANE (273)

Yesterday’s Wordle answer (game #1377) was… SHEET.

According to WordleBot, DETOX is a “decent” opening word, but really? Come on, it has an X in it! And yes, E, T and O are ultra common, but there’s no A, no R, no S…

S in particular would have helped a lot. Those of you who began with STARE – still 4% of all Wordlers, even after its appearance as an answer – will have had only 12 words to choose from. SLATE, which left 17, was only a little behind it.

I would have been delighted to have even double that, but unfortunately DETOX left me with 159 possible solutions. I’m still disappointed to have ended up with a four, though, because WordleBot’s CRANE was worse still at 273, and it managed to score a three.

SHEET is a moderately difficult Wordle. Its average of 3.7 implies it’s easier than that, but the average will have been skewed by the performance of STARE and SLATE. The repeated Es in the middle will have complicated the solving process, as will the fact that S can be followed by so many other letters.

SPENT, SWEET, STEEP, SLEET, SHEEP, STEEL, SHEEN and about a dozen other words were played by plenty of people, so the too-many-answers thing might be an issue too.

I had to choose between a couple myself. TASER, my second guess, cut the shortlist to seven, but I only found five of them: STEEL, STEEP, SHEET, SWEET and SKEET. The other two were ISLET and SLEET. I can see how I missed the former, but not the latter.

My narrowing-down guess was WHELP, which is just a great onomatopoeic word in general, as well as containing the letters I would need to choose between my shortlisted words.

As it happened, it might have left me a 50/50 between STEEL and my as-yet-undiscovered SLEET, but fortunately it didn’t. When the H turned green it left SHEET as the only answer, so I played that next for a four.

What is Wordle?

If you’re on this page then you almost certainly know what Wordle is already, and indeed have probably been playing it for a while. And even if you’ve not been playing it, you must surely have heard of it by now, because it’s the viral word game phenomenon that took the world by storm last year and is still going strong in 2024.

We’ve got a full guide to the game in our What is Wordle page, but if you just want a refresher then here are the basics.

What is Wordle?

Wordle challenges you to guess a new five-letter word each day. You get six guesses, with each one revealing a little more information. If one of the letters in your guess is in the answer and in the right place, it turns green. If it’s in the answer but in the wrong place, it turns yellow. And if it’s not in the answer at all it turns gray. Simple, eh?

It’s played online via the Wordle website or the New York Times’ Crossword app (iOS / Android), and is entirely free.

Crucially, the answer is the same for everyone each day, meaning that you’re competing against the rest of the world, rather than just against yourself or the game. The puzzle then resets each day at midnight in your local time, giving you a new challenge, and the chance to extend your streak.

What are the Wordle rules?

The rules of Wordle are pretty straightforward, but with a couple of curveballs thrown in for good measure.

1. Letters that are in the answer and in the right place turn green.

2. Letters that are in the answer but in the wrong place turn yellow.

3. Letters that are not in the answer turn gray.

4. Answers are never plural.

5. Letters can appear more than once. So if your guess includes two of one letter, they may both turn yellow, both turn green, or one could be yellow and the other green.

6. Each guess must be a valid word in Wordle’s dictionary. You can’t guess ABCDE, for instance.

7. You do not have to include correct letters in subsequent guesses unless you play on Hard mode.

8. You have six guesses to solve the Wordle.

9. You must complete the daily Wordle before midnight in your timezone.

10. All answers are drawn from Wordle’s list of 2,309 solutions. However…

11. Wordle will accept a wider pool of words as guesses – some 10,000 of them. For instance, you can guess a plural such as WORDS. It definitely won’t be right (see point 4 above), but Wordle will accept it as a guess.
